Padded JacketEd1.300

Short upper garment of fine white cotton, padded, lined with white ramie. It has long sleeves at right angles to body of garment. Each sleeve has a band of shiny blue fabric at the writst, and has a curved lower edge. Sleeves are joined to body of garment with a concealed seam. Front edges of garment are angled outwards towards the bottom, and each side has an added panel near the edge. There is a facing with rounded lower edge extending about half-way down the garment, and an additional narrow neck facing of pasted silk basted in place with stitches invisible on the face of the garment. Front closing overlaps to the wearer’s right, and has a single frog closing. Ramie lining.

Handmade rendition of the Korean flag. Square flag of cream coloured silk-like fabric, with two ties in each corner. Designs are formed of coloured fabric inset into cut-out areas of the flag. At the centre is a disc with an S shape division at centre, dividing the disc into two swirls, one red and one dark blue, each tapering to a point at one end (yin-yang symbol). Radiating out from the disk towards the four corners are four sets of three dark blue bars, some broken and some solid. Clockwise from the top, the first is broken-solid-broken, the second is solid-solid-solid, the third is solid-broken-solid, and the fourth is broken-broken-broken.

Short shirt of yellow fine silk with outer front facings and wrist bands made of burgundy silk, fastened with ties of red silk, doubled and sewn on the inside. Skirt made of red rayon gauze damask, patterned with roundels of paired dragons, called “ssang-yang-mun-sa”. Skirt is formed of three and one-half loom-width panels, pleated onto white waistband with long ties, all made of ramie. The skirt opens completely at the back. At the top edge of the right panel five Chinese characters are woven with gold thread; below them are two parallel green bands. The left upper edge is pulled up very slightly into the waistband, thus raising the bottom edge at that point. One tie is detached from waistband.

Under-trousers of lightweight fine white ramie. Pants are angled out from the waistband to the ankles. Body of pants is pleated onto a wide waistband, opening at the back. At each side of the waistband opening is attached a narrower long tie. Pleats face towards centre, front and back. Back opening extends down the inside of each leg to about the knee.

Cantonese Opera SkirtN1.723

Pink skirt with embroidery and pleats. Across the top is a wide cotton waistband with two long ties and three frog closures. The skirt has two identical panels, overlapping at centre front. The pink damask is woven containing a flower motif. The centre front pieces have appliqué lotus, tree peony, and prunus motifs. The edges are lined with thin gray trim. The inside is unlined.
