Sago Peg3134/3

Sago peg with carved, painted head. Peg is split from its tapered bottom to the thicker midpoint, where it is wrapped with a wide band of woven rattan. Its top is painted a dark brown with areas of lacquering, and carved into the heads of a human and a bird. Two faces each span two facets of the diamond-shaped human head, featuring engraved eyes and protruding lips in an undercut chin. Above is the bird’s head, sitting atop a long curved neck with parted beak dropping toward the forehead of one of the human faces.

Sago Peg3134/2

Sago peg with carved, painted head. Peg is split from its tapered bottom to midpoint, where it is wrapped with a wide band of woven rattan as well as two thin rings also of woven rattan. Its top is painted a dark brown with areas of lacquering, and carved into the heads of a human and a bird. Above is the bird’s head, sitting atop a long curved neck with parted beak dropping toward the forehead of one of the human faces. Small wings are blunt and partially unfurled.

Yam Mask3123/86

Yam basket mask. Mask is constructed of basketry in thin strips of rattan wrapped around a frame of thicker rattan pieces. Headdress is spade-shaped, with alternating areas of open and closed basketry in black, dark yellow, rust red and white paint applied heavily onto the surface. Under a densely painted and coloured forehead are two round eyes covered in white. Open spaces fall away below, with a long slightly raised nose between, two nostrils at bottom, and to the sides an outline of a face with chin. This is covered in a rust coloured paint. The back of the piece is undecorated.

Wood and bamboo spear. A thin, flat head of bamboo comes to a sharp point, and is bound at its other end to a narrow wooden shaft by string and beeswax. This is inserted into the shaved end of a thicker shaft of bamboo and secured with rattan, fibre and beeswax. Four thin lines are carved around the shaft where the shaving and wax begins.

Bamboo and wood spear. A narrow, concave head of bamboo is bound to a narrow wooden shaft with string and beeswax. The shaft has been carved into patterns highlighted with lime. This is inserted into a thicker shaft of bamboo, secured with rattan and beeswax. There are natural ruddy-brown striations along the shaft.

It is inserted into a bamboo shaft, bound with woven rattan and beeswax. Thin lines have been scratched around the shaft towards both ends, as well as jagged lines below the join.

Wood and bamboo spear. The long wooden head has seven tiers of twin barbs, increasing in size toward the base. It is inserted into a bamboo shaft and bound with woven rattan and beeswax. Long X shapes are carved into shaft, and thin lines scratched around it at top. Columns of short lines have been scratched in the butt on three sides.
