Ornament3326/52

Chest ornament composed of woven rattan. Inserted through a tube-like pocket near the top is a wood crosspiece wrapped in plant fibre and red cloth with two large cowrie shells attached on either side. The lappet consists of three long woven strips with three smaller strips layered overtop. Above the crosspiece are two triangular sections of weaving. A plant fibre cord is attached to the crosspiece at either side. The weaving is outlined in single or double rows of small white shells. The front is coloured red, and the back is left natural brown.

The lappet consists of a long woven strip with scalloped edges, that tapers towards the bottom, with three smaller strips layered overtop at the tip. Above the crosspiece is a small rectangular section of weaving. A long plaited cord is attached to the crosspiece at either side. The weaving is outlined and decorated in single or double rows of small white shells.

Black against tan geometric woven patterned basket (part a) of a square shape with lid (part b). Both the basket and the lid have a pattern that consists of a main horizontal black band that has tan squares within that have black centres with black bands above and below.

Cylindrical, twilled basket (part a) woven in a diagonal pattern with folded strips of grass. Has a string tied twice around the outside near top. Wadded up dark brown-green and black cloth (part b) is inside at the bottom. There is also a coil (part c) of plant fibre, possibly rattan?

Dance Mask3277/1 a-e

Large dance mask (part a). The wooden mask is oval-shaped, and painted black. Rectangular holes are cut for both the eyes and mouth. Surrounding the mask is a large amount of plant material simulating hair, which is attached to both the mask and wooden frame. The mask is adorned with a headdress consisting of a red woven band, three rows of small circular shells, a single row of cone shells, the remnants of a row of red feathers, and topped with rows of black feathers. A wide strap of plant fibre extends back around the head, and is decorated by four shells on each end. A rattan frame extends down to each side of the mask, with woven fibre and strings of shells attached. Three similar dance wands (parts b-d) of red feathers and bird skin, one of which is still mounted on a wooden handle (part b). An ornament (part e), composed of three pieces that are tied together - a bundle of black feathers, a wrapped stick with a piece of bone, feathers and metal, and another pointed stick piercing a ball-like decoration.

Hat3237/1

Gourd hat. Half-gourd creates the dome of the hat, with stem raised at centre. An edging of rattan wraps around the base of the gourd and is hammered into place with small nails. Interior holds woven rattan lining and soft ring that cushions the head. Twisted fibre chin ties emerge from either side of ring.

Dance Mask3228/3

Dance mask. Large conical head is made of woven rattan and wood covered with a layer of painted mud, grey on back, white and light red-brown on the face. A round flap stands up on top of head and a broad protruding skirt flares out at bottom front. Oval ears sit high on head, protruding from each side. A ridge runs down forehead to nose. Nose is long and thin, spanning from mid-face to front of skirt, with an open mouth underneath. Eyes are made of rings of weaving, protruding, with small bunches of feathers placed evenly around the ring. A thick edging of feathers line the sides and front of the face.

Body Mask3167/1

Tumbuan body mask. Tall, conical, mask intended to fit over a dancer’s body is woven of rattan and wood, plastered with mud. Three faces are situated at front, the top being the largest and most prominent. It is oblong, with a pointed head, protruding ears, heavy brow, round shell eyes, and a large protruding flap for a nose. Around the jaw is attached a beard made of a thick layer of short grass. The two faces below are round, with holes for eyes. Ears, noses, beards and brows are similar to the oblong face’s. White feathers are attached to the nose of the bottom. Shells hang from the ears of the top and middle faces. Hand holes are cut into the object near bottom on sides, the left of which is covered with a fringe of long grass. Back is undecorated.

Plain, cylindrical container (part a) with lid (part b). Container is darker around the smaller upper portion, has a smaller lighter portion just below, and has a medium brown larger lower portion. Lid is decorated with a band of woven rattan in brown and black. Surface of bamboo is shiny.

Belt3187/2

Belt of rattan. A long strip of thin wood is curved into a circle and wrapped with thin strips of rattan. On the exterior, the rattan is woven into patterns of ‘x’ shapes, triangles, and blocks of colour in dark brown and light yellow. A seam of green plastic runs horizontally through the centre of the designs. The interior rattan is dark brown and undecorated. At each end, a small stick is attached to aid in fastening the belt.
