Baby Carrier2739/1

Doll-sized basketry cradle. Dark brown and light yellowish strips of bark are woven into the basketry on outer sides in a repeating step pattern. A light coloured curved wood handle is tied on near the head of the cradle with strips of soft rawhide and several more strips are knotted on at either end and inside.

Part (a) Elongated rectangular coiled basket (bifurcated stitches) with attached lid and front tie closure. Parallel slat base and lid construction. Fully imbricated in cat-tail grass (?) with geometric diagonal stepped rows alternating in red and black cherry bark. Part (b) Lid has flange. Rim is imbricated in cat-tail grass (?) and the surface of lid is beaded in rows of red and dark cherry bark. Rawhide hinges and tie closure.

Tall narrow coiled basket (bifurcated stitches) with attached flanged lid. Parallel splint base and lid construction. Rawhide hinges, front closure, and string handle. Fully imbricated in cat-tail grass, with same dark cherry bark geometric design front and back. At front on one corner is a vertical row of connected and alternating red and dark cherry bark triangles. On each short side is same vertical row of dark cherry bark triangles that connect at corners to form a three pattern. At front rim are tiered stitches at intervals, alternating between red and black cherry bark. at sides and back there are only two stitches. Lid has design of three dark cherry bark diamonds, with red cherry bark lines on each side. Repeated shape, alternating between red and dark cherry bark, along rim.

Part (a) Rounded cylindrical coiled basket (bifurcated stitches) with flanged lid, part (b). Watch-spring base and lid construction. Rawhide handle on basket and one thong on lid. Fully imbricated in cat-tail grass (?) with design in dark cherry bark of alternating bands of 'succession of tepees' (as per label) and solid line. Lid is convex and has flange. Two rows of 'arrow heads' separated by solid line, all in dark cherry bark, with two rows of solid dark cherry bark at center, all on cat-tail grass (?) background. Fibre string attached to one side of skin handle.

Rectangular, flared coiled basket (bifurcated stitches). Parallel slat base construction. Upper half of basket is fully imbricated in cat-tail grass (?), with diamond designs in staggered rows of dark cherry bark, and red cherry bark. Lower half of basket has "cluster of flies" pattern alternating between red cherry bark and cat-tail grass and dark cherry bark and cat-tail grass. Rim has intervals of red cherry bark. Skin handles tied at each corner of one side and looped through front loop.

Rectangular coiled basket (bifurcated stitches). Elongated watch-spring construction. Rawhide tie and metal tie through the same side. Fully imbricated with overall checkerboard design in rows of alternating bands in red and dark cherry bark separated by cat-tail grass (?). Design near base is three rows of red cherry bark beading with one row of dark cherry bark beading below first row of cherry bark. Basket had small coil handles on each long side at one time.

Rectangular slightly flared coiled basket (bifurcated stitches). Parallel splint base construction. Upper half of basker is fully imbricated in cat-tail grass (?), with design on upper half of basket of zig-zag pattern outlined in dark cherry bark, then cat-tail grass (?) and red cherry bark center. Alternaing intervals of red and dark cherry bark along rim. Lower half is imbricated with zig-zag pattern with flat bottoms and tops, in cat-tail grass (?). Two rows of dark cherry bark imbrication on bottom. Two rawhide loops and long knotted handle on one long side, one loop at center and long knotted handle on other long side, one long thong on each short side.

Part (a) Elongated oval coiled basket (bifurcated stitches) with pointed ends and attached lid, part (b). Fully imbricated in cat-tail grass (?) with rows of geometric diagonal stepped design alternating in dark and red cherry bark. Same configuration is repeated on flanged lid except at center, which has two beaded rows of cat-tail grass (?). Rawhide ties, handles and hinges. Basket looks Interior Salish, similar to D1.364 and D1.290.

Round coil basket (with bifurcated stitches), with lid. Rawhide handles tied into basket at both sides. Imbricated design in two rows of alternating checkerboard diamonds, in dark cherry bark and cat-tail grass (?), and red cherry bark and cat-tail grass (?). Short two row foot has beading, light colour cat-tail grass (?) on top and dark cherry bark on bottom. Part (b) lid has same cherckerboard diamond design but has two of same colour diamonds then alternates to other colour pattern. Knob at top is fully imbricated in red cherry bark. Hole in lid and shoulder of basket indicate they may have been tied together at one time.

Large rounded coil basket (bifurcated stitches) on pedastal with wide foot, and lid with flange and knob handle. Rawhide through one side and knotted. Fully imbricated with horizontal rows alternating in cat-tail grass (?), cherry bark, cat-tail grass (?), and dark cherry bark, repeated. Horizontal bands divided by vertical bands in two patterns, one is of straight vertical bands of same alternating colour configuration, other has dark cherry bark outline and a checkerboard pattern of cat-tail grass (?), red and dark cherry bark. Entire pattern on basket is repeated on foot, and on lid. Knob on lid has only horizontal bands.
