Bag3512/40

Square shoulder bag made of ostrich egg shell beads. Long strands of fringe hang from bottom edge of bag. Strands have cylindrical plant fibre beads on either end; identical beads spread throughout strap. Top opening of bag has a zipper closure.

Dog Whip3422/1

Dog whip made of sea mammal hide, with a wooden handle. The handle has a notch around the bottom with a strip of skin threaded through, and secured at the other end through a hole. The top of the handle is a combination of skin tied together, and being wrapped. On one side, there is a large rounded notch. From the handle, the whip is composed of many layers of skin that are stitched together, with the whip becoming increasingly thinner as it progresses towards the tip. The skin is knotted close to the tip.

Drum3383/14 a-b

Double-headed cylindrical metal drum with off-white rawhide skins at both ends (part a). Interlaced skin ties stretch and secure the skins. A single strip of rawhide is wound through the ties around the centre with a looped handle. Curved wooden drumstick (part b) with flat head. A short length of plant fibre is tied behind the flat head and attached in a notch partway down the shaft.

Choker-style necklace composed of a band of chain mail with pentagonal metal ends, each with a small attached loop and a small looped wire through it. The chain mail is covered by small strips of metal wrapped around the chain mail. Attached to the lower edge is a string of small bells, with one larger chain and bell at one end and a small hide tie at the other end.

Basket3304/1

Four-sided woven basket. A large rectangular top, which tapers in to a small rectangular base. The sides and rim are beaded with cherry bark and cedar bark in a repeating flower-like design, alternating between dark red and black with off-white. The rim of the basket is beaded as well. There are five loops of rawhide tied through the sides of the basket, one on each of three sides, two on the fourth side.

Fishing Creel3328/1

Fishing creel basket with attached lid. The basket is constructed of coil weaving with an irregular curved rectangular base, concave back and convex sides creating a bulge at the centre of basket narrowing to rounded rectangular mouth. Imbricated with insect designs in red and black bark. The lid is attached by two rawhide ties. There is a rectangular hole woven in the centre of the lid. There is a small slit in the front edge of the lid, and just below the rim of the basket. The interior is plain. (A brown shoelace has been tied to the back of the basket.)

Woman with Labret3260/111

Portrait mask. Mask is painted blue with large black eyebrows and black eye outlines. The eyes are carved out as circles; the nostrils are painted red; the mouth is slightly open and carved through with a rectangular opening, the lips are painted red. Below the lower lip is an inlay of abalone as the labret. On the back are four holes with a hide strap attached at each side. Artist’s inscription on back: RD 75.

Portrait mask with short white feathers along the top edge, along with four longer dark feathers. The face has large black eyebrows, black eye outlines, carved out eyeholes, and red nostrils. The mouth is slightly open, with red lips and carved teeth. There are four holes on each side on the back for hanging, with a hide thong. Artist inscription on back.

Pair of beaded moccasins. Hide shoes are heavily beaded on toe and around ankle with red and blue flowers and green leaves, on a white stem. Mouth of each shoe is lined with grey fur (rabbit?). Base is sewn on and heavily worn.
