Drum3383/10

Wood drum with reptile skin. The drum tapers in from the top, and then flares out to a wide base. The wood is plain on the upper portion, and carved on the base and then wrapped with three horizontal bands of animal skin. The skin is secured by adhesive. There are four raised additions in the centre of the drum skin, and a mark where a fifth was once attached.

Wood drum with reptile skin. The drum tapers in from the top, and has a cylindrical base. The sides are painted with black and off-white vertical stripes. The skin is secured by two rows of wood pegs, and a notched leather band that wraps around it. One side has two raised areas, one with a metal ring, and the other wire, looped through.

Hourglass-shaped drum. Made of wood with reptile skin stretched as a membrane, and open at the other end. A handle is placed on the narrowest part of the drum with a thin ridge extending vertically along the length of the body. On the opposite side, another ridge extends down the entire opposite edge. Decorated with low-relief designs on its sides.

Dagger3326/47 a-b

Dagger (part a) with a leather sheath (part b). Dagger with long steel(?) blade on one end and short triangular iron blade on the opposite end. The long blade is stamped with small crescent shapes fourteen times in two columns of seven near widest end of blade. Hilt made of wood covered with leather, band of reptile skin around centre of hilt. Sheath made of leather with reptile skin at opening and knotted at pointed end. A twisted cord of leather is attached to a small loop at the top of the sheath.

Stringed Musical Instrument2668/2

Cantonese opera instrument. Two string fiddle, or violin (erhu, erxian), with bow attached, made from bamboo cane; two gourd-like pegs and two strings stretched over a bridge attached to a section of bamboo covered with reptile skin. Bow is strung with hair.

Carved wood drum with an hourglass-like shape. There is a rounded, rectangular shaped handle on the side; opposite is a carved, cutout design of two bird figures. The central surface is detailed with an incised geometric design with white pigment in the cuts. Reptile skin is resting on the top of the drum; binding is missing.

Drum composed of a carved wooden base, incised with lines in v-shapes around base and border of zigzag lines around top, and with a dark brown finish. The top of the drum is covered in stretched reptile skin. The rim of the drum base is smaller than the top circumference, and the base tapers inwards from the bottom rim, and then back out wider to the top of the drum.

Basket1060/49 a-b

Circular basket with rounded sides and watch-spring bottom, constructed of grass in bundle coiled technique. Decoration consists of a series of double-delineated diamond shapes, evenly spaced around the sides, made by beaded strips of brown plant fibre (all around the inner diamond line), possibly reptile(?) skin on the lower half of the outer diamond line, and an unidentified black material on the upper half of the outer diamond line. The fitted lid is slightly domed, with a knob, and is decorated with six cross designs, beaded in brown and black.

Carved wood drum, cylindrical in shape with a slight flare at the bottom edge. The wood has a reddish finish with three vertical ribs and a rounded handle at one side, in the middle. The handle ends with bird heads and the two other ribs have strips of leaf threaded through holes. Reptile skin is resting on the top of the drum; binding is missing.
