Knife3509/7 a-c

Long knife (part a), whittling knife (part b) and scabbard (part c). Long knife has a deer horn hilt carved into the profile of a bird’s head. Hourglass-like designs and curvilinear motifs incised throughout. Protruding from the top of the bird’s head and the beak are sections of short black and red hair. Hole drilled through pronounced nostrils, for hanging or attachment purposes. Hilt grip covered with woven band of rattan. The blade is convex on one side, slightly concave on the other, and widens from the hilt. Tip is angled. The whittling knife has a small curved blade attached to a long, slightly curved handle. Blade end of hilt decorated with a wide band of braided metal. Blades of both knifes are secured to hilts with resin. The scabbard is composed of a wood sheath for the long knife and a bark sheath for the whittling knife. Wood sheath made of two pieces of wood bound together with rattan. Ties alternate between single dyed strands and thick decorative bands. Bands, woven with naturally coloured and dyed strands, consist of “X”-shaped designs, concentric circles and knots. Wood is painted dark red and has incised motifs, matching designs on long knife hilt, throughout. Bark sheath is undecorated and secured to wood sheath with plain rattan ties. Braided rattan carrying cord, with looped end, threaded through bark sheath.

Container3526/1

Basketry container with lid, encased in a leather holder. Container has a circular mouth that flares into a rounded body; raised braided seam around middle. Body tapers into a small flat base, with a concave centre. The lid has an inner ridge, that fits into the container body, and a raised knob on the top centre. Bottom edge of lid has braided decorations; sides of knob are covered in cowrie shells. The holder consists of three vertical straps secured together with three horizontal straps along the bottom, centre and top of the container. Front and back strap are separate pieces; left and right side made up of one long strap that extends overtop of the container, imitating a handle. Additional leather ties are looped throughout the holder. Motifs are incised and darkened across all straps. Left, right and back straps have alternating stripes and "X" shapes; front band has wide diagonal lines throughout.

Hand Puppet3453/2

Hand puppet of a mouse groom. Hands and feet are made of cast resin, head has an internal wooden cone, covered in cast resin. All components are painted. Head and hands are light brown. Black lines painted across face and neck, imitating fur. He has black eyes and black bushy eyebrows. Nostrils are red, and have white whiskers below. His mouth is a long red line, with two long front teeth. Oval-like ears on either side of his head. Groom is wearing a dark grey, two-piece suit, with a white collared shirt, dark red bow tie and black shoes. Jacket is secured with two buttons along the front centre, and has a chest pocket and two flap pockets. Pants are plain. Puppet is operated by inserting a hand inside the body to control its head and movements.

Hand Puppet3453/1

Hand puppet of a mouse bride. Hands and feet are made of cast resin, head has an internal wooden cone, covered in cast resin. All components are painted. Head and hands are light brown. Dark brown lines painted across face and neck, imitating fur. She has black eyes, red nostrils, a red smiling mouth, and two large front teeth. Her short ears are triangular. She has black hair, carved in relief across her head, that extends into long strands of string hair at the base of her neck. Puppet is wearing a layered, lace-like veil with floral embroidery along the bottom edge. Veil is secured around her ears and forehead with a beaded headpiece. Red and pink flowers across top of headpiece. She is wearing a white dress, with two long slits up the sides. Top of dress is covered in floral embroidery, with silver-coloured highlights, and skirt is plain. Cuffs and bottom edge of dress are trimmed with bands of scalloped, lace-like material. She has a wide, pink belt around her waist, tied at the back. Underneath her wedding dress, she is wearing silk-like pants and dark purple shoes, that curve upward at the toe. Bouquet of red, pink and purple flowers in her right hand. Puppet is operated by inserting a hand inside the body to control its head and movements.
