Rattle Bowl2959/21

Large rattle bowl with red slip and design inside, cream slip and design outside. Round vessel has a narrow circular base, from which thin walls flare widely toward the rim. The exterior is light brown, painted in a small open pattern of dark brown lines. At rim and base are encircling lines of dark brown and orange. The interior of the bowl is painted orange, overlaid with a large pattern of crosses in light and dark brown. At the rim are several encircling lines, some straight, one zigzag and one in a W and M motif. The base of the interior is convex, holding noise makers that rattle when the bowl is moved.

Nose Ring2934/2

Brown coloured, circular nose ring cut at the top centre to allow insertion onto the nose. The piece flares and thickens slightly toward the centre bottom. The surface is a mottled brown, covered in thin dark brown cracks.

Bowl2862/23

Round, wide-mouthed bowl. From the rim, the bowl flares out to about 2/3 of the way down, where it sharply narrows to a small round base. The top outside surface is a light yellow colour, covered in a pattern of finely drawn brown lines interspersed with small orange blocks. At bottom, where the bowl begins to narrow, it is painted with rings of brown, orange and yellow. The interior of the bowl is a dark brown. Both inside and outside have a shiny glaze.

Blowgun2814/54

Blowgun with long, hollow, cylindrical wooden shaft. The shaft tapers slightly toward the bottom and is completely wrapped in tightly wound palm bark. At the top of the shaft is a rounded protrusion of resin holding what appears to be 2 thin strips of wood(?) that are light orange and white in colour. The hollow mouth piece is carved of wood and flares at both ends. It is smooth and shiny and attached to the shaft with resin.

Nokoro Spirit Mask2814/5

Long, rectangular, brown mask. The sack-like mask is made of tree bark stitched along either side. The top of the mask folds over behind the head and has a dark brown fringe made of bark strips which cascades down the back like hair. Two eyeholes are made at the bottom of the mask, below the face. The face of the mask is a large oval made of dried black resin, painted with white and yellow features and geometric patterns. There are two large semi-circles on the forehead, four concentric circles for the eyes and cheeks, vertical lines decorating the eyebrows and a small semi-circle mouth forming a smile. The face has protruding triangular nose and eyebrows made of balsa wood.

Manioc Strainer2814/26

Long basketry strainer/press. This elongated tube is splayed open at one end where it is woven into an open loop. A braided fibre cord is tied around the loop to secure its shape. At the other end, the sheath is tied shut with bent twigs, and expands into another loop. On the loops at both ends, short, loosely braided rope is attached, and resin is embedded into the palm weaving.
