BasketNd644 a-f

Coiled basket (parts a-f) with bifurcated stitches; parallel splint base construction; partially imbricated. The design consists of geometric shapes (two per side, one per end); two rows of discrete triangles in red on plain ground; rim is beaded. Parts b-d are square shaped sections of a bended branch that wrapped around the top of the basket. There are two rawhide ties (parts e-f) that used to attach to the outside.

Red and tan coiled basket with bifurcated stitches; parallel split base construction; fully imbricated. The design consists of discrete vertical, triangular patterns and a checkerboard zigzags around rim; base is beaded in bullrush. Four string ties attached to a branch that encircles the basket and held on by twine.

The design from bottom to top: alternating vertical checkerboard stripes and diamond meshes (five checkerboard diamonds); double row of diamonds staggered (honeycomb); animal figures; vertical stripes along rim; dark and light quill on rim. Wire splint. Colours: red, tan.

Cedar root basket consisting of interlocking coiled work (bifurcated stitches); parallel slat base construction with wide slat foot. There is a braided coiled border; coiled openwork. Partial imbrication; continuous vertical zigzag designs. Alternation of vertical stripe bands with vertical zigzag bands. The first is in bullrush with red cherry or in bullrush with black and red. Zig-zag bands are tri-colour.

Rectangular, footed basket with slightly flaring sides and a flap-style lid secured with three ties. Simple interlocking coiled work (bifurcated stitches); back of basket is extended and folded to form a flap lid (parallel coils with edge of two coiled rows around it); foot of three coiled rows; twine ties. Total imbrication: series of vertical bands in black/red/bulrush repeating diagonal pattern, all against ground of bulrush. Pattern on lid is extension of pattern on back. Edge imbricated in bulrush; small patterns in red and in black. Colour: tan.

Brown birch bark basket with an oval-shaped top and a rectangular bottom. Bark is bent and laced into place, with birch twine around the rim overcast with thin strips of root--a small strip of bark runs underneath the rim as reinforcement. Large blue and red beads are affixed around the rim. A handle is made from a thin strip of rawhide strung from one side of the rim to the other.

Oblong birch bark basket; birch bark is bent and laced into place. A twig splint is overcast with natural and aniline dyed root. The overcast stitch forms a scallop - the colour sequence is as follows: red/purple/wide band of natural/purple/red/purple/wide band of natural/purple. The darker part of the bark is to the outside.

Birch bark dish. Birch bark bent and sewn into place. The rim is reinforced with splints overcast with birch root and decorated with black bark. A twig is laced on lower down. There are also heavier pieces of bark on the ends and sides for reinforcement. Light side of bark is to the outside and darker flaps are laced on the ends and sides. The rim is overcast splints beaded with black bark. Part of the overcasting stitch leaves the splints exposed.
