Model Totem Pole3029/1

Carved and painted model totem pole. Pole has an eagle at top, wings at sides, feet planted on a small bentwood box. The box is balanced on the head of a human, with protruding nose and painted features, wearing a shoulder cloak. With his hands and feet the man grips a downward facing whale. The whale has a green and black torso with carved and painted eyes and open mouth showing clenched white teeth behind red lips. Its nose plunges into the pole’s rectangular wooden stand which is painted red and green. The back of the pole has been partially hollowed out.

Lantern Slide3000/44

Hand painted glass lantern slide. A 3-sided rectangular wooden frame holds the irregular or broken glass plate that has been hand painted on the back. The scene shows a First Nations chief being shot, with a gun right on the side of his head. He is wearing a red scarf, brown jacket and tall animal skin headdress, on a black background. The gun is held by an arm emerging from the right. The glass is held to the frame by grooves in the wood as well as small pieces of tin inserted in the wood behind the pane. An irregularly shaped wood bar crosses over the back side of the glass, glued to the frame at top and bottom.

Dish3000/41

Shallow dish or bowl carved from a single piece of wood. The thick base of the dish is small and round, inset on the exterior of the piece. Walls flare outward from base toward a wide mouth and thick out-set rim. Exterior has a mottled colouring, light brown to black. Interior is mainly dark brown with some lighter areas.

Dish3000/40

Shallow dish or bowl carved from a single piece of wood. From the thick base of the dish, wall of uneven thickness and height flares outward widely toward a wide mouth and thick overhanging rim. Exterior has a mottled colouring, light yellow to brown, and natural striations can be seen in the material. Interior is mainly brown with some lighter areas.

Small canoe-shaped basket. Basket is oblong, ends narrow, with a flat base and curved walls topped by an open, scalloped rim. Decoration is a square weave of black imbrication along base and rim, and dark red across the scallop design.

Inkstand3000/6 a-b

Wood instand with glass inkwell. Base (part a) is made of a low square of cut wood. Top back is flat, while front is curved concavely. The wood is painted dark brown. A round hole is bored through the centre back to hold the glass container (part b). Inkwell is round, with a thick bottom that flares toward the thick rim at top. A paper label is nailed to the front edge. Label reads: "This Inkstand is made from timber taken from the “S.S. GLAD TIDINGS”, First Methodist Mission Boat on the British Columbia Coast., 1884 - 1903".
