Hair Tie3486/10

Wasa watana (hair tie) woven in a complementary warp weave. Tassels formed by groups of intersecting warps that are woven as separate bands but are then folded and sewn to the main band near the ends. Tassels sewn onto the main band. Edging of small white beads on the edges of the main band and the tassels; the beads were threaded on the weft before weaving. Warp fringes. Alpaca fibre, finely spun, with wool.

Dance Sling3486/35

A fragmentary dance sling (wichi wichi) that has a solid braid and a flat, finger-woven band as handles on either side of the vestigial cradle. Geometric patterns in shades of light and dark brown appear along the large braid including a bi-colour variant of the “amapolas” motif named after a poppy that grows on the banks of rivers. The large braid ends features three smaller tassels in orange, dark dusty pink, and olive green, followed by a larger hot pink tassel, branching into three wrapped braids finished tassels in dark burgundy, orange, and olive green. The yarn in the large braid is continued into the cradle, forming a triangular motif with a split at the centre. Small tassels in pink, orange, and green decorate the along the top and bottom edge separated from each other in even increments. A medium sized pink tassel is attached to the transition between the cradle and the flat braid, and one final dark dusty pink tassel is attached the flat braid at the half-way point.

Dance Sling3486/34

A dance sling (wichi wichi) that has a solid braid and a flat braid as handles on either side of a vestigial cradle. The thick braid features a diamond pattern in shades of brown, grey, and black called “amapolas”, the name for a poppy that grows on the banks of rivers. The main tassel end features three smaller tassels in yellow, red, and forest green, followed by a larger dark red tassel, branching into four flat braids finished with smaller tassels in dark burgundy, grey, orange, and yellow. Attached to the opposite end of the thick braid is the cradle with a triangular motif, and 8 small tassels in pink, grey, and orange along the top and bottom edge separated from each other in even increments. The flat braid attached to the other end of the cradle, finished with a small multicoloured tassel.

Dance Sling3486/42

A secondary braid from a dance sling (wichi wichi). One end of the sling has a small loop with alternating black and white stitching, leading into the main red braid with black and white geometric and concentric diamond motifs which branches off into five braids decorated with pompoms on the end. The pompoms have varying tones and textures from the different styles of yarn used including sectionns in yellow, dark brown, red, blue, off-white, green, orange, grey, and purple. One of the branching braids is missing a pompom.

Hobble Tie3486/48

Braided animal hobble (hank’ay). The natural fibre braided loop is created from 16 pieces of yarn in brown, beige, and black, possibly from coarse llama(?) and horsehair(?) with a spiraling diagonal stripe design. A red and beige bobble with a beige horsehair(?) tassel is attached to the ends of the braid..

Hat3486/26

Knitted cap (chullu) made of hand-spun sheep’s wool and camelid hair with small ear flaps, a scalloped border, and a long tail (chupan) on the top with pom-pom tassels. The main cap and ear flaps are decorated with bands of geometric shapes in alternating colours against a dark reddish-brown background. The bands feature off-white and hot pink ovals, yellow and pale grey circles, purple and orange motifs, pale grey and off-white round motifs, pink and light green rectangular shapes, pale grey and yellow zig-zags, red and purple motifs, and squares in light green and pale grey. The long tail, attached to the centre of the top of the cap is decorated with bands of wavey motifs in hot pink, pale grey, yellow, purple, light green, off-white, bright pink, pale grey, orange, light green, hot pink, yellow, and pale grey against the light brown background. A purple pompom and two smaller pompoms in light brown and light green are attached to the end of the tail. The scalloped border has segments of orange, pale grey, bright pink, off-white, and light brown.

Hat3486/32

Black crocheted cap (jokollo) with a small brim on the front, ear flaps, and a long triangular panel attached to the back in the neck area. The natural sheep and camelid fibre cap has off-white edging and synthetic embroidery decorating the front. The brim has a deep red border with a repeating pattern of small segments of yellow, white, vibrant pink and bright orange. A triangular geometric design is embroidered on the brim with the same wool as the edging. The main design embroidered on the centre on the front of the cap features a plant with multi-coloured leaves and a yellow flower between two colour-blocked circular motifs. The plant and circles are contained in a pink and yellow rectangular border decorated with thin ovals resembling leaves, arranged to form a partial rainbow ombre from the bottom corners around to the centre of the top. The ombre moves through shades of deep red, to orange, then yellow, ending with green on the right side and pink on the left side. The cap also includes an extended off-white and red tassel on the top.

Hair Tie3486/23 a-b

Wasa watana (hair tie). Unfinished hair tie (part a) and sample (part b). The hair tie is braided, not woven, but the intersecting bands are inserted into the main band in the same way as woven examples. After insertion, each half of the added band is braided away from the main band. The smaller fragment illustrates an asymmetric insertion of threads for a single band that branches off the main band.

Coca leaf bag (chuspa) that has a single pocket woven into one face, a carrying strap made of two braids, woven tubular edgings (ribetes) covering seams and edges, short tassels along the lower edges, and bud-like tassels on braids along the lower edges. Main design panel has a condor, human, and quadruped, while flanking panels have X-shaped motifs.
