Skirt of shells hung from plaited coconut fibre cords. The skirt consists of many lengths of small white and yellow shells strung by natural fibre, which are then tied to two cords of plaited coconut fibre. One strand has five smaller different shells. (Small piece of tape with collector number attached to cord.)
Headdress (pa'e kea or pa'e kaha) consisting of a woven band of coconut husk fibre adorned with small circular pieces of shiny shell, mostly layered in pairs, and topped with a small asterisk design of turtle shell. The woven band tapers on each side, ending in loops, through which plaited coconut husk fibre is attached on both sides for tying. Both tapered end is topped with triangular pieces of shiny shell and a cut-out design in turtle shell. Attached are alternating plaques of carved turtle shell and white shell adorned with human images (tiki) and geometric designs in low relief. The shells are pierced and strung together.
Carved male figure. Doll (part a) stands on large feet, legs spread, arms slightly akimbo and held away from the body. Legs are painted white, torso black, and face red. A black fuzzy beard surrounds the chin, mouth is open with small inset shell for teeth, eyes are made of the same shell, as is a headband tied around the forehead. A necklace of tubular sections of grass hangs down the chest, and arms have woven plant fibre sleeves. A bag of netting and plant fibre is slung over the left shoulder and adhered to the wood at the handle. A loin cloth of netting with long pieces of grass at back sits around the waist. Part b is a peice of netting similar to that of the loin cloth. Part c is a small feather grouping that attaches by a hole in the doll's head.
Carved female figure. Doll (part a) stands on large feet, legs spread, arms slightly akimbo, large breasts carved at chest. Head is covered in a woven fabric to represent a hat or hair, above protruding ears, shell eyes, and a large open mouth with inset shell teeth. A thick necklace of small white and brown shells is wound several times around the neck. A skirt of grass or bark is attached around the figure’s waist. Painted white. Part b is a ring of short grass, light yellow-brown, woven into a bracelet.
Three small ornaments (or fishing lures?) carved of mother of pearl shell, and then hung from a thin cord of twisted natural fibre. (Small piece of tape with collector number adhered to cord.)
Ear ornament (taiana). The ornament consists of a large shell and wood disk worn in front of the ear and a curved tusk spur. The spur has a single hole through it, and is adorned with a small human figure (tiki).
Mai mask. Carving of a face is oblong and narrow, with a pointed head, a ridge running down forehead, and a prominent nose with a curved nostril free-spanning the lower part of the face. Mask is painted in swirls, short rounded lines, and colour blocks in shades of brown and dark yellow, with white lime pigment in the eye and nose area. Short grass surrounds the jaw as a bushy beard. Shells are inset into mud as eyes and at the top of the head, from which sprout fine cassowary feathers. Plant fibre is looped through the top. Interior of mask is concave.
Abalone shell with exterior covered by basketry, conforming closely to its contours and secured over shell edges. Decorated with a dark blue rectangular ovoid at centre, two canoes and flying bird shapes in green or brown, and mouse-like animals in pinkish-red or brown arranged around central area. Around the edge are concentric stripes of yellow, red and brown.
Mai mask. Carving of face is long and narrow, with a pointed head, a ridge running from forehead to nose, and a thick jaw area. A thin piece of shaped wood spans area from chin to bottom of mask. Face is painted in swirl and linear patterns in red, white and black. Jaw is covered in shells inset into mud, with layers of feathers and twisted plant fibre along chin and mask bottom. A collection of twine, feathers and grass is tied through a hole at top, creating a loop for hanging. Interior of mask is concave.
Large oval argillite platter with shell inlay around the top of the outer edge. The centre of the platter is concave and completely covered with a design of a large, central, sculpin face, with a human on each side of it in profile, facing inward. The rim had sixteen evenly spaced oval shell inlays, but seven shells holes are empty.
