Lace-making Thread1350/31

A hank of white silk thread is enclosed in a piece of dark blue tissue paper which is folded into a packet and held closed by two steel pins. Two hand-lettered white paper labels, one wrapped around the outside of the package and one wrapped around the hank of thread inside.

Hat1343/5

Woman's black hat with flat brim and cylindrical crown with flat top. The crown and the top of the brim are covered in silk(?) fur-like fabric. Three rows of metallic gold cord around the crown; two gold tassels at centre back. Underside of brim is encrusted with gold thread embroidery and black braid on silk fabric. Long, wide black silk ribbons, are attached one on each side of the underside of the hat, and they attach together near the top with hooks and eyes. Lined with light orange fabric.

Jacket1343/3

A woman's waist-length, close-fitting, long-sleeved black wool jacket with a wide low-cut square neckline. Lavishly trimmed at the neckline with black braid cord and metal beads in a floral design. Centre front opening has hooks and eyes. Sleeves are fitted from the shoulder to the elbow and are trimmed with fine pleating and decorative braid. Sleeves have some fullness at the elbow, but are tapered to the wrist. Button and loop closure at the wrists. Lined with striped cotton herringbone fabric. Fine draw cord at neckline to bring it closer to the body. A 5 cm. strip of a different black fabric added at the bottom to lengthen it. Hooks at bottom front edge attach to skirt 1343/1.

Fan484/2

Round paper fan that inserts into a small semi-circular-shaped wooden piece. Wooden piece extends into a long and narrow stick-like handle and is attached to a long cream coloured fibre cord and green tassel. On one side, the background of the fan is blue and white. Image is of a red figure wearing light-green coloured shorts. Hand of the figure is lifted in the air and is holding a red and blue stick(?). In background, arched over the figure, are alternating red and blue circular geometric designs. On the other side of the fan, there are two figures swinging from ladders on a cream and brown coloured background.

Single bound foot shoe with a raised heel and a slightly upturned toe. Heel is covered with aquamarine silk with multicoloured floral embroidery. Upper consists of bands of red, white and lilac silk, all with multicoloured floral embroidery. Top of upper is trimmed with blue silk. Lined with white cotton. Floral embroidery on bottom of sole.

Skirt Panel453/2 c

Yellow damask silk skirt fragment (part c). The skirt has no waistband. The pleats have black edging and embroidery. On each pleat are butterfly and prunus motifs in blue on black ground. Between the pleats are peony, chrysanthemum and lotus motifs in blue on yellow ground. Along the bottom hem is a black border with peony and prunus motifs. The back is unlined.
