Cloth3448/4

Kente cloth composed of eight dark blue hand woven cloth strips. The strips have been stitched together along the long edge, and then embroidered with designs within small rectangles. The entire cloth is covered in rectangles of designs with more of the blue background showing through in the centre area. Short blue fringed ends.

Wedding Tunic3448/45

Multicoloured woman’s dress or tunic embellished with panels and bands of embroidery on both front and back, incorporating several styles of stitches. On the front, there is a large embroidered panel from shoulder to hip, and the upper edge of this panel extends over the shoulders to form a narrow yoke on the back. The panel has a black background and is heavily embroidered with inset mirrors. Bellow, there are three horizontal panels of orange, purple and dark pink, each with circular embroidery using metallic thread. The back of the tunic has a centre-back neckline slit with two buttons. There are also two slits extending up from the hem on either side. The side panels are thin vertical strips of orange, green and bright pink fabric.

Doll (a) representing a male figure carved out of wood with articulated shoulders and ankles. His face and hands are painted white with painted black hair, eyebrows, eyes, a drooping moustache and a chin beard. He wears a separate black paper hat (b) with a narrow brim and black silk ribbons that tie in a bow under his chin. A nail at the top of his head helps keep the hat in place. He wears a long sleeveless blue silk vest, gored and pleated under the arms, and fastened with a dingle button over a gored long-sleeved white silk coat fastening with ribbons tied in a single loop. Beneath this are an under-jacket with blue ribbons tied in a single-loop bow and under-trousers. His ankles are wrapped in white material, and he wears pointed shoes made of paper (?) covered with white cloth and painted with black linear and looped designs at the front and back.

Apron Skirt3390/4

Red silk apron skirt with a dark blue border that is heavily embroidered with flowers in various shades of blue. The front and back decorated panels are embroidered in the lower portion of the skirt with multi-coloured designs edged by a thin off-white floral and butterfly ribbon. There are also small multi-coloured flowers embroidered on the red silk within each area delineated by blue ribbon. The skirt is pleated and flares out toward the hemline. It has a wide blue waistband, with thin red ribbons attached for tying. Interior lined with a light green silk.

Apron Skirt3390/3

Gold-coloured silk ma mian qun (馬面裙/马面裙) or apron skirt with a thin black border, and heavily embroidered with multi-coloured flowers. The front and back decorated panels are embroidered in the lower portion of the skirt with multi-coloured designs edged by a thin blue with black ribbon. The skirt is pleated and flares out toward the hemline. Interior lined with a light blue silk. The wide beige waistband has a loop on each side (one of which gets covered when wrapped).

Robe3390/2

Robe of dark blue silk with two knot and loop closures at the neck, and two ties at the chest. A small light blue border is layered over a larger beige silk border along bottom hem that extends along front opening, and around the neck. The beige border has scroll-work designs at hips, chest and neck. The interior of the sleeves lined with embroidered beige silk, that is exposed when cuff is folded back. Robe is embroidered in various shades of blue with detailing in gold-coloured metal thread and accents in red, pink, light green and orange silk thread. The embroidered designs include flowers, koi fish, butterflies and phoenix.

Gold-coloured silk robe that fastens at the front with three spaced black knot and loop closures. The sleeves have a beige cuff with embroidery at the top. The robe is edged with a dark blue border embroidered with flowers in blue and white, and scrollwork in metal thread. The entire robe is embroidered with multi-coloured flowers and containers.

Single legging of woven cotton cloth covered entirely with embroidery in deep red silk with additional designs in dark blue, orange, dark green and light green silk thread. Copper(?) metal thread embroidery between each of the outer two bands of plaiting. Side with seam decorated with pounded metal discs with a simple floral mark at centre and one metal button. Backed with woven cotton cloth.

Pocket Bag3377/8

Tiny embroidered envelope bag, made by folding and stitching the edges of the rectangle together, leaving the other pointed end open as a flap. The exterior is embroidered with fine repeating diamond design in gold, burgundy, black and light green. All edges are finished with red trim. Two small tufts of green thread are attached on either side of the flap, and one yellow tuft at the point. The bag is lined with faded black textile.

Pocket Bag3377/7

Small embroidered envelope bag, made by folding and stitching three corners of a square together, leaving the fourth corner open as a flap. The exterior is embroidered with a large repeating geometric design (zigzag with arrows extending out from each corner in alternating directions) in burgundy, orange-gold and beige, and one line of black. All edges are finished with gold metallic thread. Two long pieces of thread are attached at the point of the flap. The bag is lined with a teal and red machine printed cotton textile, with a small leaf and berry pattern.
