Kimono Jacket371/2

Black haori (羽織) or jacket/overcoat with the lining or haura (羽裏) with colourful designs known as gaku’ura (額裏). The neck and centre opening are edged with a wide black band. The sleeves are short with hanging panels and an opening under the arms. There are white five family crests or kamon (家紋) known as maru-ni-mitsu aoi (丸に三つ葵; three wild ginger leaves in a circle) on the upper front, on the back and on the back of both sleeves. The lining on the upper sleeves have floral and coral motifs. The designs on the lower front and back lining are village scenes and seascapes with snowed covered pine tree and ume plum blossom motifs.

Large brocade hanging. The hanging is made of narrow strips sewn together to make a large rectangle. The brocade has floral motifs in ivory, blue and green on a gold ground. The back lining is green silk with ivory loops along the top edge.

Two rectangular panels with embroidery and attached borders (part a-b). The identical panels have multicoloured stripes in a geometric pattern, predominantly purple on black ground. Flanking the stripes are embroidered and attached borders. Along one edge is an embroidered border with a bird motif within blocks. Along the opposite edge is an attached border with large bird and butterfly motifs, predominantly purple with multicoloured detail. Part (b) also has a paper cover sewn over the attached border. The back is unlined.

Gray damask silk skirt with no waistband. The skirt has pleated and embroidered panels edged with black trim. The lower sections have butterfly and floral motifs in gold, white and blue on gray ground. Around the sides and bottom hem are thick black borders with floral motifs in white and blue. The damask is woven with geometric and floral motifs. The inside is unlined.

Purple damask silk hood with embroidery. The hood has four long silk ties, purple netting, tin reflectors and green tassels attached to the lower front edges. The blue border around the lower edges has butterfly and floral motifs in white, green and purple. The cream border above the facial opening has mirrors and peacock, crane, butterfly, pine, floral motifs. The embroidery overall has the civil rank motifs (crane, golden pheasant, peacock, wild goose, silver pheasant, egret, mandarin duck, quail, paradise flycatcher), mountain, wave, coral, swastika and floral motifs. The inside lining is red silk.

Small blue-green silk pants with cotton waistband. The waistband is wide with a large printed floral and leaf pattern in maroon and green on cream ground. There are two maroon ties. The legs are straight with a partially open inseam. Embroidered on the sides is a lotus motif in white, pink and purple. There is pink trim around the bottom edges. The inner lining is cream cotton with a printed floral and leaf pattern.

Fan492/1

Rattan ? fan covered in small beads and edged with blue and yellow silk fabric. The fan has a semi-circular body with a curved indentation at the back to form a rectangular shaped stem that attaches to a long cylindrical shaped, wooden handle. The handle is painted red and green. The centre of the fan has a multi-coloured bead plant motif in with dark green, orange, yellow, navy and pink on a white background. Around the outer edge are dark green, white and red stripes. The back of the fan is covered in dark pink, cotton cloth. The back has a small rectangular adhesive tag that reads ‘Made in India’.

Narrow band with woven pattern and long tassels. The pattern repeats orange geometric shapes within square blocks on black ground with green and red borders. The ends have long tassels of green, red and orange.
