TunicEdz4316

Brown silk, jacquard woven tunic. The tunic opens on the right front, held together by two metal buttons on the shoulder and two on the side. The tunic has slits up each side as well as the centre front and back. Around the neck is a Mandarin collar. The pattern and border are slightly raised and more opaque than the background. The pattern has large circles containing a bird and an animal under a tree with a building in the distance. The circles are arranged diagonally on a background of clouds and endless knots. The border is along the edge of the sleeves, the bottom of the tunic and the side opening. The border consists of clouds, bats, flowers, swastikas and the symbols Xi (joy) and Ji (luck). The pattern and border continue on the back side. The inside lining is blue silk.

Embroidered Applique1458/9

Embroidered appliques adhered to a large sheet of yellow-white paper. The centre piece is a figure in a white robe holding a Ruyi sceptre and sitting upon a blue-green dragon. There is a second figure holding a green banner while leaning on the dragon's tail. The surrounding pieces create an outdoor scene with a road, black fence and greenery. Among the scene are symbols including bats, butterflies, a pair of scrolls and a pair of circular gold ornaments.

Embroidered pieces adhered to a large sheet of yellow-white paper. The centre piece is a male figure in red and gold, holding a branch and a Ruyi scepter, while standing on a green-black dragon. To the right, is a female figure in a green robe sitting on a pheasant with three barbed tail feathers. The last figure on the right is a male playing a flute while sitting on a dragon. To the left of the centre figure, is a male figure in gold-red holding a sword and walking across a bridge. The final figure on the left is a woman in gold-green cradling a child. Among all the figures are symbols, including clouds, bats, butterflies, peonies, chrysanthemums and lotuses.

Embroidered Applique1458/2

Embroidered applique bat adhered to a large sheet of yellow-white paper. The bat has a blue and green head with yellow eyes. The bat's lopsided wings have a scalloped edge to one side and curl at the ends. One wing is blue and green, while the other is blue and pink. On each side of the bat is a barbed leaf. Corresponding to the bat's wings, one leaf is blue and green, the other is blue and pink.

Embroidered floral pieces adhered to a sheet of white paper. The centre piece is a blue vase with a pink flower and leaves upon a two-tiered table. Attached to the centre piece are several other blue and green vases with flowers and leaves. Some of the flowers are peonies and lotuses. Among the vases and flowers are symbols, including a pair of scrolls, peaches and a butterfly. All the pieces are placed closely together and outlined with gold thread.

Embroidered Applique1613/3 a-c

Three sheets of embroidery appliques adhered to paper. Part a is a large sheet of yellow-white paper with the centre piece being a figure in a red-white robe holding a branch and sitting upon a blue-green dragon. There are also two figures dressed in green holding fans over their shoulders, a figure dressed in blue holding a fan on a long pole, a gold sun and blue-green clouds. There is a sword with flowers and ribbons, and three vases filled with blue-green flowers. Part b is an embroidery adhered to a sheet of yellow-white paper of a blue vase upon a green pedestal with a pink-white chrysanthemum in the centre. The vase is filled with greenery, blue and red flowers. Part c is an embroidery adhered to a sheet of yellow-white paper of a light brown pair of castanets and a dark brown flute with a blue ribbon.

Headdress673/3

Black headdress with two blue streamers. The black front piece has a top scalloped edge and sides that curl upwards. In each curled side is decorative stitching and a red swastika. Green and red stitching form a border around the headdress. Attached to each curled side is a blue streamer. The streamers are then sewn together and hang down. On the end of each streamer is a red swastika.

Hat673/1

Black hat with floral and geometric embroidery and purple tassels. The hat is made from a length of fabric and joined together at the ends. The top of the hat is left open. At the front of the hat there is extra fabric that hangs down with a scalloped bottom edge. The hat is black with white geometric designs and red stitching. Among the geometric designs are multicoloured flowers, insects and birds. The inside of the hat has beige lining. There are two purple tassels hanging down from the sides of the hat. The tassels are connected by several beige strands.

Black hat with floral embroidery. The hat is made from a length of fabric and joined together at the ends. The top of the hat is left open. On the front of the hat is a large red and beige flower. To either side of the flower is another smaller flower, branch and bird. Along the bottom of the hat is a beige band, bordered by red and green. The interior lining is white with faded blue flowers.

Cantonese Opera HatN1.809

The folded hat is orange and rectangular with a rounded top piece, a back flap and embroidered motifs. The hat has an orange centre panel which folds inwards on both sides. Embroidered on the centre panel are pink, purple and white peonies with green leaves and blue swirls. These designs are repeated on the inside of both side folds. The rounded top piece has a large embroidered dragon motif in green, red, purple, white, and gold. Hanging down from the top piece on either side of the centre panel is a red streamer. On the back, the flap mimics the rounded top piece and extends down past the bottom of the folded centre panel, flaring out at the bottom. The large dragon motif is repeated on the top piece of the back flap. Beneath the dragon and in the centre of the flap is a large purple symbol. Surrounding the symbol is a circle of pink and red ponies, green leaves and blue scroll designs. On the inside of the hat is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two ecru ties are attached.
