Pair of Cantonese opera shoes with leather soles and pink silk uppers. On the sides are circles of coiled wire with domed brass ornaments at the centre, domed brass ornaments at the shoe edge, and on a fabric flap on the heel. On the pointed tongue are domed brass ornaments, an orange and green pompom and a dark pink pompom. On the toe is attached a grey silk (?) thread tassel. Just above the sole is a layer of blue fabric. Cotton lining and insole. Off-white fabric edging.

A long, rectangular, off-white crepe fabric piece that has embroidered borders. The embroidered border has a main design consisting of red and green beads among red and green thread with white-gold-coloured metallic-like thread in an alternating pattern of three three-petalled profile flowers and a radiating diamond shape surrounded by a two-part laurel-crown-like shape. Each inner corner has the same pattern in a diagonal line with the latter shape at the centre having the former shape at either end. Edges are done in a white-gold-coloured metallic-like thread spiraling into a three-leaf clover-like pattern. One end is unfinished.

Cantonese Opera HeaddressEdz1648 a-e

Opera headdress representing an official's hat with imitation kingfisher feather consisting of bright blue silk. The main part of the headdress (a) consists of two pieces of silver painted wire mesh joined together with bird and cloud designs in blue silk and metallic edging: the front piece is domed with a loop at the top centre; the back piece is also domed but protrudes slightly at the top and has a band of silver painted paper with a raised geometric design at the back and has three sockets, two at the sides and one at the back, that hold the four attachments. Two straps extend down from the sides of the headdress. There are two elongated ovoid-shaped extensions (b and c), each with a circular Chinese design element at the centre and scalloped designs at the ends in bright blue silk, wire mesh, metallic edging, and a short rod that fits into the socket at the back of the headdress. Two side extensions (d and e) fit into the slots in the sides of the main part, and each is composed of an elongated dragon's (?) body from which protrudes a dragon's (?) head with two bright blue pompoms extending out from the head, each on a wire spring.

Hat made of polished black cotton fibre (?) with two small rounded flaps at the sides with a pink synthetic fibre (?) edging, a silk fibre (?) ribbon border around the bottom edge of the hat with bands of blue, green and pink and white geometric patterns, and an overall domed shape. At the front edge of the hat is a row of metal domed ornaments with a shorter row of metal figures in relief, three of which have protruding three-lobed headdresses. There are five metal medallions with floral motifs and toothed edges. Three of the medallions have bells and other ornaments attached with chain, and one has two flower-like metal protrusions with green and pink fibre at the centre and a butterfly-like metal protrusion. There is a pink fabric pompom at the peak of the hat.

Ecru tablecloth with embroidered designs. On the front are fu dog and cherry blossom motifs in silver, blue, pink and mauve. There are glass eyes, white fur and tin reflectors. Three edges are lined with silver braid on deep pink ground. The top edge and back is lined with natural-coloured cotton.

Cantonese Opera ShoesN1.749 a-b

Pair of Cantonese opera shoes, the leather sole shaped to simulate very small shoe, with wooden "shoe-horn" attached at heel to provide actual foot support, hidden under silk upper and attached cotton cuff. Upper: scroll design, silver sequins on white ground edged with black cord all on red ground, with scattered purple sequins. The off-white cotton cuffs each have an off-white cotton rectangle at the front with a loop attached on either side near the top on part a, and two loops at the top on part b. Balance of cuff, ecru cotton. Loops may have served to hold cord to keep cuff in place around foot. Cotton insole.

Pair of matching ornaments. Slender bamboo shaft, supporting a raccoon tail, encircled at bottom by a row of gilded cardboard petals, with silk pompoms wired to them. Below this, another circle of gilded petals, supporting a silk fringe. Colours are brown, white, turquoise, orange, pink, gold, and blue. Fringe on (a) is blue, on (b) white.
