Cantonese Opera Hoop BeltN1.836 a-c

Wide, ecru three piece hoop belt (part a-c) with sequins. The rectangular pieces are curved and fit together. Part (a) has one straight end and one tabbed end. Part (b) has two straight ends. Part (c) has two tabbed ends. The fabric is fixed over a wooden centre. The blue sequins form flower motifs on an ecru ground. The lining is green with a red and orange geometric pattern.

Blue three piece hoop belt (part a-c) with embroidery. The rectangular pieces are curved and fit together. Part (a) has leather tabs folded back on both ends. Part (b) has two straight ends. Part (c) has one leather tab folded back and one wooden tab. The fabric is fixed over a wooden centre. The front has prunus, peony, double gourd, flute, fan and scroll motifs on a royal blue ground. The back lining is royal blue cotton.

Cantonese Opera JacketN1.863

White jacket with epaulets and cotton body with metal snap fasteners. The epaulets have embroidered fu dog and other motifs in red, white, black and brown on white ground with a white fringe. The fu dog motif has stuffed, appliqué eyes, nose, teeth and tongue. The arms have dragon and coin motifs in brown and yellow. The cuffs have snap fasteners and fu dog motifs with stuffed, appliqué eyes, nose, teeth and tongue. The inside lining is white cotton.

The front has embroidered Taoist symbols, including prunus, flute, bamboo, double gourd motifs in pink, white, mauve and green on pink ground. The lining is blue cotton.

Woman's choli panel; consists of front panel with sleeves. Made of red light-weight silk which is heavily covered with intricate embroidery and round, inset mirrors. While the panel has roughly cut edges, the bottom and ends of sleeves are neatly finished with embroidery. There is heavy, coarse, brown fabric at the neck. The embroidery is executed in silk thread, predominantly gold-coloured with pale rose, grey-green and black. The size of the circular mirrored pieces ranges in size from roughly 3 mm to 2 cm.

Pair of pink crepe armbands (part a-b) with striped cuffs. At the cuff are three ribbon bands in yellow, red and blue, and a band of woven braid. At the top of the armband are two thin white ties. The inside is lined with navy blue cotton.

Saddle Blanket1201/18

Lavishly embroidered, padded horse blanket, made of red wool textile and decorated with multi-coloured, curvilinear, naturalistic floral motifs worked in fine silk chain stitch. A rectangular space that would be located under the saddle when the blanket is in use is left plain. The horse blanket is rectangular in shape, with triangular extensions on either side of the back end. It is fully lined with multi-coloured striped cotton textile, with a layer of wool batting between the blanket and the lining. Partially edged with embroidered binding. Multi-coloured and blue fringe is applied to all edges except the front edge.
