Man’s wedding shawl. Made of red and black block-printed cotton textile, heavily embroidered on all four corners with multi-coloured floral designs, abstract representations of peacocks, geometric patterns, mirrors, rickrack and beaded tassels. The designs on the four corners are worked in silk thread and are almost identical to each other, differing only in minor details and colours. Embroidered yellow stripes extend vertically and horizontally across the shawl and intersect at the centre with an embroidered diamond shaped medallion. The block printed designs on the textile form striped borders at each edge, and there is a central rectangle which contains stylized floral patterns arranged in diamond-shaped frames. The block-printed textile is pieced along one long edge (machine stitched) prior to embroidering. The back has a strip of black cotton fabric hand-sewn to each end.
Rectangular, embroidered, and appliquéd textile panel, decorated with square mirrors. Panel edged with closely-spaced cowrie shells on three sides; the top edge has three black fibre ties, evenly space along the edge. Bottom edge has three ‘tassels’ made of clusters of cowrie shells and metal beads (cylindrical and bell-shaped). Six large square mirrors and several small square mirrors, worked on a bright pink and orange background, and in the centre of the panel, are surrounded by a border of small square mirrors. The panel is lined with red and tan resist-dyed textile.
Diamond-shaped, decorative hood for a horse, densely embellished with embroidery that the black cotton background textile is all but obscured. The embroidered design is laid out on a grid of squares, with alternating mirrors and floral motifs in the cells of the grid; pompoms and glass beads are scattered through the design field. Two large, circular openings near the top of the piece are bordered with rows of mirrors alternating with circular embroidered motifs. There is a similar border of mirrors and circular motifs around all four edges of the piece. Fragments of fibre tie cords are attached to the top corner and at the sides, near the circular openings. There are remnants of a fringe of clear glass beads on all four edges. The piece is lined with red, white and black machine printed cotton textile, which has come loose in many places. Overall colour is maroon, lilac, black and gold.
Small, square, embroidered textile, made of red cotton broadcloth, decorated with large, circular motifs and border designs. There are four large, circular geometric motifs arranged in a four-cell grid at the centre of the piece. Each of these motifs has eight “arms” in red, dark purple, mauve, green and orange, outlined in yellow. The cells of the grid are delineated with narrow, flat silver metallic braid with four small white buttons sewn where the grid lines meet the border. A meandering, multicoloured line forms a border around the central designs. The embroidery is worked in chain stitch. Flat silver braid is couched around all four edges, surrounded by two rows of red and blue glass beads. One yellow bead is sewn to one edge. The piece is lined with red and white paisley-printed cotton textile, pieced at one corner with black cotton textile.
V-shaped, multicoloured, embroidered, decorative band. The 2 “arms” of the band are decorated with a repeated, square, embroidered motif, perhaps representing a natural object, such as an animal, bird or plant. All motifs are identical to each other in design, but differ in colouration. At the inside edge of the V is a strip (13 mm) of multicoloured, slanted Greek key motifs which has been embroidered onto an open-weave textile, then appliquéd onto the piece; the outer edge is finished with a narrow strip of black cotton textile. The lower edge of the V is finished with green commercially-made fringe (14 cm). The piece is underlined with pastel striped cotton textile.
A tall dark brown and brown mottled feather headdress with a beadwork head band. The bottom ends of the feathers are wrapped with red fabric and green yarn and attached to the beadwork head band with brown leather. The beadwork head band has a background of white rectangles each with a design in either brown, green, or pink. Brass metal circles are attached at either sides with long orange, green, and red, and pink ribbons. There are some more feathers attached to the head band.
Red cotton textile, embroidered with red, dark brown and yellow floral designs, mirrors and border motifs. There are three embroidered panels on the textile: a large band of embroidery is shaped like an elongated, inverted triangle, while the two much smaller panels are rectangular in shape, are located one of either side of the large panel, and are identical to each other. The embroidery designs on all three bands are composed of regularly-spaced, round, red floral motifs, each surrounded by a circle of mirrorwork. Each panel is bordered by narrow brown and yellow strips. The embroidery is so dense that it obscures the background textile.
Part a is a case of heavy brown leather, rounded at the top and bottom edges with rounded protrusions below thick blue silk cord which is threaded through horizontally. Parts b-d are three tapered, hollow, brown-stained, cylindrical bone holders which are found inside case.
Pink sequined robe with wide extended sleeves, side slits and side opening with ties. On the front and back are roundels with yellow and white peonies and a white geometric pattern on pink ground. Between the roundels are smaller circles with a yellow and white cross motif. The collar band has yellow and white peonies and a gold-yellow meander pattern. The sleeve and border bands are yellow-gold lines. The inside lining is white, with large lotus motifs embroidered in yellow.
