Cuff2710/3 a-b

Pair of hand sewn fabric tie-on wrist covers, or cuffs? Dark blue cotton cloth with green satin backing has darker green edging and embroidered decoration in red, yellow and pale green. At one side edge of each cuff is a long tie of folded blue cloth, and a loop of folded green cloth is sewn on to the back.

Head ScarfAf456 c

Head-tie that together with a blouse (Af456 a) and a skirt (Af456 b) forms a costume or a suit. The tie is a rectangular length of fabric consisting of four strips of black cotton sewn together. Both warp and weft have gold metallic stripes; supplementary weft floats of gold silk in solid linear design occur at regular intervals within each strip, but occur randomly in the overall pattern. Ends are unfinished and unstitched between three of the strips.

Skirt that is part of a costume or suit with a blouse (Af456 a) and a head tie (Af456 c). It has short sleeves, rounded neck, and is composed of narrow black cotton strips sewn together; decorated with four vertical rows of gold metallic thread per strip and three horizontal rows repeated within each strip but not aligned between strips. A linear, solid geometric pattern occurs randomly, in gold, silk thread.

Cantonese Opera Bed2701/18

Bed cover of the same materials and with the same decorations (as 2701/17 curtain). The cover is rectangular, with a rounded protrusion at each side of the upper edge. On the back lining are stamped two red oblongs filled with Chinese letters.

Cantonese Opera Stage Curtain2701/17

Curtains of white silk sewn to form an arch-shape with horizontal upper edge of white cotton to which blue-green Chinese characters are appliquéd. At the centre of the curtain set are appliquéd two discs of white silk, each with a Chinese character in blue-green sequins. Below them is an image of a butterfly in copper-coloured sequins. The lower edge of the arch-shaped curtain has a row of blue-green fringe. Behind the arch is a rectangular panel, and there are vertical panels with cotton backing attached to the sides. All are decorated with hummingbirds and bunches of grapes and vines, all executed in blue-green, copper, pink, and gold sequins. There are two red oval stamps with Chinese letters at back of curtain top.

Cantonese Opera Robe2701/9

A front-opening robe with very wide sleeves and a round neck. Robe is cream colour and decorated with copper and gold-coloured sequins in wavy patterns, except for the bottom of the robe and ends of the sleeves, on which the sleeves are decorated with angled straight lines of sequins. The robe has snap fastenings down the front, and slits at the sides. Stamped onto inside fabric lining of collar are two red squares filled with Chinese letters.

Cantonese Opera HatEdz1843

Opera Hat in black silk composed of a skull cap with a bulbous, wire covered in gathered silk with two arms just below a stuffed protrusion that sits at the top of the crown. A piece of oval white plastic (?) is sewn to the front centre of the skull cap, and the bottom edge is finished with green cord. A strip of fabric is attached to the back of the skull cap and folded to form two loops and two arms that extend below the bottom of the hat. The strip is attached with a series of plastic (?) off-white beads. Lined with off-white cotton. Two off-white cotton ties are attached at the bottom back.
