Necklace1590/300

Necklace of beads, eight beavers and a George Washington Peace Medal. Necklace strung on string. The pattern starting from the centre back to the medal at bottom centre is one clear bead, one red, one clear, 26 mottled red, a beaver, one blue, three red repeated three times, followed by one blue bead and four red. The medal is oval. Engraved on it is a tree with a First Nations man with pipe and a man of European descent. Engraved below is “George Washington, President 1793”. On the back of the medal is coat-of-arms of the United States, together with engraved motto “e pluribus unum”. Maker’s mark stamped at bottom of medal. Maker’s mark also stamped on each beaver.

Prayer WheelEe4.42

Silver, cylindrical mani khorlo (prayer wheel). The silver wheel is covered in repoussage metalwork, with two bands of Sanskrit text inscribed in Lantsa script conveying iterations of **||Om mani padme hum|, the sacred six-syllable mantra for Avalokitesvara. The same mantra is printed on thin paper and rolled around the cylinder’s core spindle, where it is hidden from view; a bud-shaped finial with a flat, circular base is featured on the top, while a metal chain with a polyhedron finial is attached to the side. Cylinder is mounted on dark brown wooden handle capped with metal, about which it turns.

Wedding Sari1546/1

A long rectangular blue silk gauze sari embellished with metallic gold representations with red, green, light blue, and dark blue of leaves, branches, and flowers. The motifs in the main design field are arranged in diagonal rows. The long edges are embellished with rows of gold acanthus leaf-like swirls, interspersed with red, blue, and white dots. There is a very narrow silver binding at the edges.

Breastplate1590/285

Large metal breastplate with three horizontal pieces of metal that connect to two vertical pieces of metal on either side. The top horizontal piece has an incised scalloped design, three cut-out diamond designs in the centre, and two cut-out heart shapes at the ends. The middle horizontal piece has three cut-out heart shaped designs that alternate with two cut-out oval-shaped designs. The bottom horizontal piece has eight staggered cut-out triangular-shaped pieces. Small beaver pendants hang from the bottom of each row. The horizontal lines are separated with two large cut-out heart designs that cut-out crosses in the centre. The vertical pieces have cut-out oval-shaped designs on them.

Single bar, thin, flat cross with square ends. Double zigzag lines form border. Three engraved sunbursts and two diamonds. Suspended from bottom are two concentric flat rings with zigzag line borders. The larger has an engraved sunburst. Cross and both rings stamped with maker’s mark.

Wedding Shawl1472/3

Man’s wedding shawl. Made of red and black block-printed cotton textile, heavily embroidered on all four corners with multi-coloured floral designs, abstract representations of peacocks, geometric patterns, mirrors, rickrack and beaded tassels. The designs on the four corners are worked in silk thread and are almost identical to each other, differing only in minor details and colours. Embroidered yellow stripes extend vertically and horizontally across the shawl and intersect at the centre with an embroidered diamond shaped medallion. The block printed designs on the textile form striped borders at each edge, and there is a central rectangle which contains stylized floral patterns arranged in diamond-shaped frames. The block-printed textile is pieced along one long edge (machine stitched) prior to embroidering. The back has a strip of black cotton fabric hand-sewn to each end.
