Carrying Board2902/36

Two pieces of wood, bound together by woven rattan board. Narrows at one end. Narrow end also bound together by third piece of wood wrapped in rattan. Thick green rope tied to top and hangs loose with wooden 'V' shaped piece tied at end. Two light brown fibre straps attached to woven rattan, with dark brown rope tied to one end of strap and one end of wood.

Lenten Costume2796/6 a-b

Two piece costume consisting of a heavy wool hooded jacket (a) and pants (b). Checked design woven in dark purple, dark red, green and yellowish-beige wool embellished with bands of purple wool fringe. The coat opens at the front and closes with metal clips; the underside of the sleeves is made of a solid burgundy coloured fabric; pocket sewn onto front with red thread. Wool pants with elastic waist and metal closure; purple fringe at knees and pant bottoms.

Model House2724/1 a-c

Rectangular model village spirit house (haus tamburan) on 14 dark brown carved stilts has a basketry and clay mask with Cowrie shell eyes hanging at each end and a fringe of reddish grass along the bottom. Woven grass rope roof and walls with two small square openings in each are supported by an inner bamboo frame and floor boards. Wood house post finials carved in the shape of birds sit atop the roof peaks at each end; (b) stands upright with engraved markings on chest and light brown open wings while the darker (c) bends forward and looks down, scalloped wings with dark brown markings pointing upwards.

Bull Headdress2736/4

Bull headdress consisting of curved crown-like wood head piece with carved bull head facing forward from top and long strands of darker and lighter dried grass and red ribbons hanging down in two thick bunches from grass pompoms at the base of the wood. Long, squared rods, with circular tips and hanging red ribbons, project up from the bottom sides of the headpiece. Carved and painted designs in white, red and black decorate the wood on both sides and a piece of rope is knotted through a hole below the bull head..

Bull Mask2736/3

Round, two-part, white, black and red painted bull mask with natural horns and cow hide at top has foam lining attached with nails. Green bottle glass eyes surrounded with cow hide (painted white in places) stare upwards, a piece of hair is attached at the backof the head between the ears, and there is a square opening below the chin. Several lengths of green synthetic rope are wound and bound around the neck joins, others emerge from inside through nostrils and holes in the head, ot one of which is attached a piece of lead, a stick and a grass bundle at the end.

Sawfish Headdress2736/9

Sawfish headdress, made of wood painted red, black and white, has protuding eyes and a long sawfish rostrum bound onto the top with string. Attached to the small base are three braided grass strands knotted together to fit over the head, six long grass pleats that hang down like hair and a black grass fringe. A cushioning ring of black cloth is attached with string to base.

Shield2720/41

Rectangular wood shield with rounded corners is decorated on front with carved and painted black snake in orange and white wavy elements with black borders and has four holes down each side with long sisal tassels. At one end is a notched spine from which protrudes a neck and bird head with black mouth and white eyes. Back has long spine running from carved eye/feather-like design at base of bird neck, with a deep curved handle with two triangular cut-outs in the centre and painted opposing zigzag patterning on the sides.

Shield2720/32

Large wooden shield with carved and painted designs. The shield is rectangular in shape, with rounded corners at the top end from which a pointed post protrudes. On the front is a design with curl and diamond motifs in burnt orange, outlined in dark brown on whitish ground. Knotted through one of eight holes along the sides of the shield is a sisal fibre tassel. On the back is a protruding curved handle with two square holes, one larger than the other.

Pasinawi and Pasindawa2716/12

Wood sculptural group, carved and painted with yellow, reddish orange and cream pigments, rises from a mound-shaped base with eyes. Tall standing figure with elaborate facial mask is wrapped with snakes; two large ones coiled around its shoulders, another two swallowing its legs and one hangs down from its nose between its legs to end with a huge head at the back. A large spotted bird is perched on two pointed bamboo branches behind the figure's head and two small figures holding pointed spears in each arm stand guard at its feet, one at each side, facing outward. All figures wear grass skirts and have clay topped heads embedded with shell and grass hair. All eyes are shell and strands of twisted rope with attached shells and seeds hang from all noses, ears, necks, wrists and ankles.

Skin Cutting2716/8

Painted wood carving of a skin cutting figure. A horn-billed bird, a male with large genitalia wearing a white mask with grass hair, and a small crocodile with curled barbed tail are stretched out, one behind the other, and clinging to the bottom of an inverted canoe with a carved crocodile head prow. All figures are adorned with shell eyes, twisted grass bracelets and anklets, and they are decorated with white, red, and ochre designs over a dark brown background, as is the canoe.
