Cantonese Opera Boots2701/1 a-b

A pair of boots high enough to cover the wearer’s calf, with very thick white soles curved upwards at the front. They are solidly covered with sequins that have been sewn onto the surface cloth. The foot is demarcated from the calf with red piping, and there are vertical lines of piping at the front at back. The sequins are patterned in radiating stripes on the foot portion of the boots, while above the piping there is a dragon curling towards the bottom of the boot and then facing upwards towards a red disc. The sequins are multi-coloured against a background of rich blue-green.

Part (a) is a long tear drop shaped plywood with three dimensional carved wood head attached centre front. Face has eyes outlined in red seeds, hook nose with open nostrils and long feather and fibre rope through wide indented mouth. Back board and head painted with geometric designs in brown, gold, white and black. White feathers double fringe attach to perimeter with twisted fibre band. Secondary face on board has wide smiling mouth. Attached black and white feather, red seed medallion top piece, back has support material of hat and ridge in wood. Four flat wood leaf shapes (b-e) with black and white zigzag markings, cut white feather surrounds them, attached at an angle to a stick bound with fibre and white feather down.

Large round-body, part (a), is light coloured wood with two small protruding handles pierced, with leather handle strap going through them and attaching to wider leather strap. Extra piece of leather connected to side of leather strap. Mouth of container is wrapped and woven with grasses. Lid, part (b) is bulbous with round and smaller flat top, does not fit well on container. Inside container is charred black.

Gourd container (parts a-b) with a bulbous base that tapers to a funnel shaped neck (part a). Part b is a semi-spherical shaped lid with a looped leather tie on top. The entire gourd is dark red with a shallow engraved design of various geometric patterns. The central line is painted green along with alternating lines along the bottom of the base. The inside of both pieces is hollow.

Backstrap LoomE164 a-h

A loom (parts a-g) an unfinished woven wool textile consisting of blue, green, yellow, orange, pink, red and white central stylized geometric designs surrounded by a repeating, multi-coloured square border all on a navy ground. The textile is attached at the top and bottom to a large, cylindrical shaped wooden stick (part a). Intertwined in the multi-coloured warp are two cylindrical shaped heddles, one covered in red and white twine (part g), the other in navy twine; a flat, rectangular batten with triangular, pointed ends (part d); one cylindrical shaped bar with indentations on the ends (part e) and two long cylindrical shaped sticks of various size (parts f and h). Separate to the loom is a hollow cylindrical shaped shed roll (part c) and the rectangular shaped brown, leather back strap (part b) that has large loops of twisted twine ties on either end.

Robe1022/1

Lavishly embellished robe, made from light beige heavy silk brocade fabric, woven with silver and gold metallic threads, incorporating floral motifs and roundels. The brocade has been cut and pieced to create a symmetrical placement of the motifs. The robe has long, straight sleeves and mandarin collar. The robe closes asymmetrically in the front (left over right), with buttons and loops at the neck at centre front, at the upper chest on the right side, under the right sleeve and at the waist side seam. All edges (neck, front, hem and cuffs) are trimmed with brightly coloured, finely embroidered and soft brown fur. Two rows of brightly coloured, finely embroidered bands encircle the robe at hip level. The robe is very heavy, long and voluminous. Lined with bright blue and turquoise silk damask textiles.

Basket with cone-shaped wooden frame and woven sides. Three two pronged willow branches form the conical frame, attached to a circular branch with thin pieces of hide. The sides are an open, twilled weave of black and white goat hair. There is a long strap attached to one side of the frame, also woven black and white goat hair.

Part (a) Large cylindrical coiled work (bifurcated stitches). Parallel slat base construction (with reinforcement stitches); support for lid on inside of basket; buckskin handles wrapped with cedar root. Partial imbrication of vertical and horizontal bands in cat-tail grass and black cherry. Vertical bands are of black diamonds alternating with cat-tail grass diamonds, each on reverse ground. Horizontal bands are of 2 slat rows of checkered cat-tail grass and dark cherry bark. Base and rim have same colours alternating in single row. Bottom has red cherry bark beading. Part (b) Lid has outer three rows imbricated in cat-tail grass with dark cherry bark surrounding cat-tail grass triangle. Slat construction. Skin handle at center.

Headdress1279/1

White fur headdress, with many small pieces around cap, with front red cloth and metal stud band, bundles of black striped brown feathers attached at sides tied with green, long fur tail tied with green and bell attached at sides. Long curved red protrusion out each side, with white and yellow beads sewn on, white feathers at cap, fur tails, red feathers, bell, and string of red and white glass beads, with bells at centre, attaching both together. Layers of strips of skin and pieces of tail, red and green ribbons and some skin trail at back.
