Hand puppet of the Le Diable (devil) character from the Guignol story. Head and hands are carved from wood and painted. He has a red face with black eyes, goatee, and black heavily-lined facial features. He wears a red head scarf with a triangular strip of leather extending back over it from his forehead, and his fabric body is red with a yellow and brown zigzag embroidered collar. The fabric is nailed to the hands and head. Operated by inserting a hand inside the body of the puppet to control its head and movements.

On his head he wears a green felt hat with tail, open at the top, revealing flat painted wood. Medium brown hair (fur) wraps around the head under the brim of the hat. His fabric body is purple with a gold, red and purple embroidered collar. The fabric is nailed to the hands and head. Operated by inserting a hand inside the body of the puppet to control its head and movements.

Violin Case3290/1

Woven basketry violin case. Made of bear grass (white), cherry bark (red), and cedar bark (black) beading over cedar root. The maker's signature is in gold beading at the top of the case. There are two hinges of leather, and on the opposite side, a woven handle and two leather ties. The base and interior are plain.

Dance Mask3277/1 a-e

Large dance mask (part a). The wooden mask is oval-shaped, and painted black. Rectangular holes are cut for both the eyes and mouth. Surrounding the mask is a large amount of plant material simulating hair, which is attached to both the mask and wooden frame. The mask is adorned with a headdress consisting of a red woven band, three rows of small circular shells, a single row of cone shells, the remnants of a row of red feathers, and topped with rows of black feathers. A wide strap of plant fibre extends back around the head, and is decorated by four shells on each end. A rattan frame extends down to each side of the mask, with woven fibre and strings of shells attached. Three similar dance wands (parts b-d) of red feathers and bird skin, one of which is still mounted on a wooden handle (part b). An ornament (part e), composed of three pieces that are tied together - a bundle of black feathers, a wrapped stick with a piece of bone, feathers and metal, and another pointed stick piercing a ball-like decoration.

Circular leather and wool hat. Brim and sideband of hat covered with short wool. Crown is flat and of processed leather with four seams in cross shape towards centre. Centre of crown has leather-covered button. Lining of sideband is off-white wool. Lining of crown is made of natural sheep wool.

Tall round hat with four sides meeting at a crown. The exterior is a black velvet and the brim is lined with a coarse fur that is light and dark brown. The interior is lined with long, slightly curly fur, and is light brown with a few small white patches.

Hat3080/71

Hat is small and round with four sides meeting at a flat crown. The hat’s exterior is a bright dark blue velvet with a floral damask design within the fabric. The brim is lined with a strip of light and dark brown fur and the interior is lined with a white synthetic fabric with long fibres, made to look like fur. Between the fur brim and the interior lining there is a small strip of red cotton fabric.
