Thunderbird Dance Panel863/3

Carved tail panel. Painted wooden Thunderbird face with wooden slats below, belt above. The wooden face is mask-like, somewhat square with rounded corners. The features are painted in red, black and green with a protruding orange nose. Below the face are five wooden slats painted red and black with green details. Attached to the upper back edge of the wooden face is a brown leather belt with a gold-coloured buckle.

Carved wood drum, cylindrical shape narrowing in centre. Open end in shape of a crocodile with open mouth. Sharp teeth, pointed snout with pointed ridges along back. Eyes outlined in red seed, fibre tie through open nostrils. Centre part has geometric band paintings and handle. Other end has stylized face with red seed eyes. The open end of the drum is covered with snake skin. Drum is painted white, brown, black and light brown.

Four Winds Hat853/3

Man’s hat. Very large, elaborately decorated hat, constructed in three tiers: 1) a 13 cm wide band of brown reindeer fur fits around the head lined with printed cotton broadcloth. This band is loosely covered by a band of red wool fabric appliqued with multi-coloured embroidered ribbon, braid, and rickrack. There is a narrow band of off-white fur at the bottom edge and twelve red, green, and yellow streamers (58 cm long) attached at the centre back; 2) above the fur, there is another band of multi-coloured ribbons, rickrack, and braid, 11 cm. wide; 3) this is surmounted by a 33 cm. band of dark blue wool fabric trimmed with multi-coloured ribbons and braid. The top is shaped into four points, (the "four-winds" hat).

A large wooden headdress carved as a wolf head. The lower jaw is attached with metal nails; there is a strip of hide at the top of the head. Painted black with red eyes and upturned nostrils.

Light, beoge-coloured fur boots with pointed, upturned toes. Cotton drawstring rim with red and green felt trim with a zigzagging design sewn beneath it. Drawstring is a multicoloured braided cord with red and green felt tassels at the ends.

Pink hat with white fur trim. The back extends down farther than the front, with two white ties sewn at the sides. There are small ears on the top front and pink button eyes on the front. The ears, eyes and edges are trimmed with white fur. The inside is lined with padding and blue, orange, white plaid fabric.
