Ornament3512/39

Tanned leather ornament resembling a round bottomed purse. Top edge is folded over with strands of black and white beaded fringe strung through middle, hanging onto front of ornament. Outer pieces of fringe are looped, inner strands are straight. Protruding black beaded band borders all sides, with white triangle designs throughout. Ornament has two braided straps, stitched on either side of the top edge, that are secured together with three knots.

Tortoise shell snuff container with strands of twine extending from the top edge; twine decorated with beads made of plant fibre and ostrich egg shells. An apron-like cover, made of rabbit skin, is secured around the front of the tortoise shell. It is tied in place with straps knotted through holes drilled in the back of the shell. Additional straps remain loose. Hanging from the bottom edge of the rabbit skin are rows of alternating plant fibre and ostrich egg shell beads. Back of shell is uncovered; brown-red plant fibre is adhered to the back bottom edge. Interior of shell is stuffed with plant fibre.

Square shoulder bag made of ostrich egg shell beads. Long strands of fringe hang from bottom edge of bag. Strands have cylindrical plant fibre beads on either end; identical beads spread throughout strap. Top opening of bag has a zipper closure.

Doll3502/5

Male doll, seated on a basketry base, with a stone face. Eyes and mouth are incised, wide nose and hair are carved in relief. Figure is wearing fur clothing, consisting of a parka, mittens, pants and boots. Mittens are hairless. Bottom edge of parka has leather fringe. Dark brown highlights down front of boot calves. Vamps have dark green embroidery along their edges. White stuffed dog, made of sheep skin, in front of doll. Dog is wearing a harness, trimmed with fur, and the doll is holding the leather reins in each hand. Basketry base is undecorated.

Ostrich egg water holder with a hole drilled into the top; leather strap inserted into hole, for carrying purposes. Incised antelope designs around sides; incisions are filled in black. On front, large antelope is shown in profile with one foreleg raised. It has detail work on its face and stripes on its leg. On back, large black antelope is depicted in profile with both forelegs in motion. Base is undecorated.

Ostrich egg water holder with a hole drilled into the top; leather strap inserted into hole, for carrying purposes. Incised geometric and animal motifs throughout; incisions are filled in black. Antelope designs are on front and back, directly underneath the drilled hole. Animal on front has its knees bent and tongue out; animal on back is standing straight. Long lines of connected diamonds run down sides, dividing the front and back of the container. Base is undecorated.

Sinew Twister Tool3508/10

Small bundle of four sinew twister tools, held together on a hide string. Holes hide is strung through are drilled through the centres of tools. String is knotted on the right side, untied along left. Two tools towards right end of cord are flat, and have rectangle-shaped tops and tapered ends. Two on left side are curled on both ends, giving the tools an overall “S" shape.

Model Kayak3505/31 a-g

Model kayak made of skin, stretched over an internal wooden structure (part a). Strip of antler(?), secured with wooden pegs, lines front keel. Ends of kayak are capped with oval-shaped pieces of ivory(?). Two sinew rigging lines in front of the high-walled cockpit, and one behind. Two ivory fasteners attached to each line. A double-bladed paddle (part b), spear (part c), harpoon (part d), harpoon line rest (part e), and two tools (parts f and g) are separate. The paddle, spear, harpoon and harpoon line rest are made of wood with antler blades (parts c and d) and reinforcement components (parts b, c and e). The two tools are made of antler. The largest (part f) is flat with a straight handle and a curved tapering end. The smallest tool (part g) has a rectangular handle, with triangular indentations along the bottom edge, and a thin pointed tip.
