Staff3326/21

Staff or dance wand. Wooden carving depicting a male figure riding on horseback. The figure has what appears to be a snake draped over his shoulders. The horse is disproportionately small. His elongated head sits at an angle on his long neck. He has large eyes and three horizontal lines on each cheek. Extending up from his head is a large double axe-shaped headdress that curves down to points on each side. The handle is cylindrical and plain, with a small looped end.

Mask3326/14

Kpelie mask carved of stained wood. Long oval female face that tapers to a point at the chin. Round projecting mouth exposes teeth. Arched brows form a continuous crosshatched pattern across the face. Long slender nose with slightly bulging slit eyes. Face marked with concentric diamonds symmetrically flanking each side. Two sets of fin-like projections extend from each side of the face. Emerging from either lower side of mask are two tapering, oblong projections. Central rosette crest surmounting forehead symmetrically flanked by bull horns. A small bird with head down stands on the crown. Mounting hardware attached to back - two eye hooks and a red wire.

Rhythm Pounder3326/15

Rhythm pounder. Wooden female figure with long curved legs and feet standing on a small domed base. Short arms hang at sides. The figure wears a bracelet on each wrist, an arm ring on each upper arm, one band below the breasts, and two bands at the waist with a cloth hanging(?). There are incised crosshatched designs on the face, shoulders, arms, breasts, quadriceps and pregnant belly. The face extends out from the neck, and hangs down. The face is long and oval shaped with heavy lidded eyes and a serrated mouth with a flat back. Perched on the head is a rodent-like animal with its tail dangling down behind the figure. The shape of the human figure's head mimics that of the rodents. The ears sit high on the head, and are folded back.

Staff or dance wand. Wooden carving depicting a male figure standing next to a sacrificial ram. The figure holds a double axe in his right hand. His elongated head sits at an angle on his short neck. He has large almond eyes, and six horizontal lines on each cheek. Extending up from his head is a large ornate double axe-shaped headdress that curves down to points on each side. The figures stand on a square platform with carved diagonal lines around the sides and a plain cylindrical handle beneath.

Headdress3326/12

Headdress carved from a single piece of wood. The wood has been stained black, with the carved areas revealing a light brown. The base is dome-shaped, and is carved with rows of zigzags around the exterior. A high arched crest extends from the top, slightly extending beyond the dome, with a cutout upside-down V-shape, leaving a triangle underneath. The crest is decorated with carved geometric designs: repeating V's, lines, triangles, crosshatching and X's.

Ancestor figure made of wood with copper and shell inlay. Figure is shown seated on a platform with feet together, and hands on ankles. He wears a tall elaborate headdress with rolled side elements represented with rope-like inlaid copper. The same copper is heavily wrapped around each forearm. The chest, nipples, top of head, front of headdress, and edge of platform are inlaid with small circular copper pieces. He has a very narrow and pointed face, with lips and jaw jutting out, and eyes of inlaid cowrie shells.

Small wood carving of Vishnu as Tirupati. The figure stands on a tiered burgundy platform, directly under a white, green and pink striped arch. Another larger, more ornate arch behind has columns painted on each side, and the top has a white face at centre. Both hands are extended out, with the right hand holding palm out, and fingers down. The upper body and chest are painted black, while the hands and feet are gold. The figure wears an ornate headdress with a gold cone extending from the top, large ear ornaments, chest ornaments, and sarong.

Buffalo Headdress3294/2

Wooden bovine headdress (or mask). The animal has two large, slightly curved horns extending up and over its head. There are two small ears on either side, next to the eyes which are carved in low relief. The snout is long, with nostrils flared at the end, and teeth bared. The teeth, eyes and nostrils show remnants of white paint.

Dish3259/15

Trough-like dish, carved from a single piece of wood. Reddish-brown in colour with an incised animal design across the top of the dish, and mirrored on each end. The extended ends slant downward somewhat. The bowl is oblong-rectangular in shape, similar to the overall shape of the dish. The base is flat; "HAIDA ART Reid" inscription on base.
