Helmet Mask1491/1

Dark brown wooden mask carved in the shape of a female head, of a single piece of wood. Face features eyebrows, articulated eyes, ears, a protruding nose and mouth and a high forehead, with hairdo carved on the top. A twisted fibre cord is threaded through a small hole directly underneath the bottom lip and knotted.

Mask carved from a relatively flat piece of wood with low relief features including an arched brow, slits for eyes, a slightly flaring nose and a small rectangular mouth. The face is coated in off-white clay around the eyes, nose and mouth. From the chin, extending up to the temples, the edges of the mask are painted black. There is a hole bored through the mask on either side of the face at the eyebrows.

A carved wood female figure with a flat chin holding a bowl on her head. Hair is carved with an elaborate braid coiled around her head, on top of which, there is a bowl carved with a snake around it. The eyes bulge outward; wide nose and lips. There are three vertical scarification marks on each cheek. Her arms are bent perpendicularly at the elbows so that her hands are on her angled breasts. She is in a kneeling position.

Carved wood tool in a paddle-like shape with a long, flat rectangular shaft, an elongated oval shaped bowl and a wide rectangular-like shape handle with a tear shaped cutout centre. The shaft is heavily incised with stylized repeating geometric pattern. The handle has snake-like detailing with four heads at the four corners. The top edge is jagged.

Flute consisting of a large piece of bamboo, bound with two sets of fibre ties and two cassowary feather rings at the top, middle and bottom. The stop of the flute is a carved kneeling man facing outwards with a large, crooked beak bird standing behind him with its chest pushed out and its wings behind its back standing on a jagged board. The bird and human figure has inlaid cowrie shell eyes and are detailed with white and brown pigment. The figures, the bamboo and the fibre ties on the bamboo are covered in a black stain.

Carved wood drum with an hourglass-like shape. There is a rounded, rectangular shaped handle on the side; opposite is a carved, cutout design of two bird figures. The central surface is detailed with an incised geometric design with white pigment in the cuts. Reptile skin is resting on the top of the drum; binding is missing.
