Shadow Puppet3338/11 a-c

Tang Seng (Buddhist Monk from the Tang dynasty) shadow puppet with separate head (part b) and khakkhara or monk staff (part c). His face is cutout and outlined in black, and he wears a Buddhist crown on his head with large green ties. He wears a cloak and interior dress indicated by the different sleeves. The cloak and one sleeve have a red brick pattern with light green outline, and the other sleeve is solid yellow. He wears flowing green pants, which mostly cover his black shoes. Limbs jointed with fibre at the shoulders, elbows and hips. Operated by three rods. The khakkhara has a yellow shaft with a spear(?) tip at one end, and four repeating concentric designs (blue, red, green, red) and rings on the other end. Operated by one rod.

Shadow Puppet3338/18 a-c

Lan Caihe shadow puppet with separate head (part b) and basket of flowers (part c). Depicted with a cutout face. They wear a full-length red robe decorated with circular floral decorations, and their hair is tied up in a bun, which is wrapped in a green scarf and tied with red ribbon. They wear black shoes with green cloud-like designs on the toes and heels, and red edging. Limbs jointed with fibre at the shoulders, elbows, wrists and hips. Operated by three rods. Basket of flowers has a handle, which extends down into a tripod stand. There is one large red flower, smaller red or yellow flowers and lots of green leaves. There is a small loop for the puppet's fingers.

Shadow Puppet3338/16 a-c

Lu Dongbin shadow puppet with a separate head (part b) and fly-whisk (part c). His face is cutout, and outlined in black. He has a long, pointed black beard. He wears a blue scarf(?) on his head with the yin yang symbol. Dressed in olive green full-length robes with wide sleeves and decorated with the yin yang symbol. He is depicted with a sword on his back, black with a green hilt and red handle, and two red tassels hanging down. He wears black shoes, with green decorations on the toes and heels, and red edging. Limbs jointed with fibre at the shoulders, elbows, wrists and hips. Operated by three rods. The fly-whisk has a thin blue shaft, and then tied to the end is a length of hair(?) or feather(?). There is a small loop for the puppet's fingers.

Shadow Puppet3338/14 a-c

Han Zhongli shadow puppet with separate head (part b) and magic fan (part c). He has long black hair, with two buns tied with red ribbon on his head. His face is heavily lined in red, and he has a long black beard and moustache. He wears a long purple-pink robe with circular green vine and flower designs, bordered by red. On his feet, he wears black shoes with green details on the toes and heels, and red edging. Limbs jointed with fibre at the shoulders, elbows, wrists and hips. Operated by three rods. The fan is orange-yellow with diagonal alternating bands of red and green on the blade, and a red fire-like detail on top. There is a small loop at the end of the shaft for the puppet's fingers.

Zhang Guolao shadow puppet with separate head (part b) and membranophone fish drum (part c). He has a cutout face, which is heavily lined. He has a long white beard, and wears a scarf(?) on his head. His robe is a deep blue-green, with circular motifs in black, and outlined in red. He wears black shoes with three red decorations down the side, and a red pompom at the toe. Limbs jointed with fibre at the shoulders, elbows, wrists and hips. Operated by three rods. The membranophone is a long piece of orange-yellow bamboo with dried fish skin stretched over one end. Two smaller rods with green cloud-like feet extend from the base of the bamboo. There is a small loop for the puppet's fingers.

Flute has ten notches and 9 holes, and is tied at one end with a green ribbon. There is a small loop for the puppet's fingers.

Cao Guojiu shadow puppet with separate head (part b) and jade tablet (part c). His face is cutout and lined in black, with very delicate features, and a long pointed beard. He wears a rectangular black cap decorated with small red and green pompoms, red edging and green-blue clouds. His brown robe is decorated with clouds of red, blue, green, yellow or black. His pants are striped red and green. Limbs jointed with fibre at the shoulders, elbows, wrists and hips. Operated by three rods. The jade tablet is depicted as a light green-blue, and is club-shaped. There is a small loop for the puppet's fingers.

Knife3329/1 a-c

Long knife (part a), with a small knife (pisau raut; part b), and scabbard (part c). The knife blade is convex on one side and slightly concave on the other side, and is decorated with inlaid brass in a series of circles and vines. The blade itself gets gradually wider and then tapers in forming a point in line with the cutting edge. The grip is wrapped with finely woven fibre. The hilt of horn is elaborately carved, with red pigment in the lines, and has two drilled holes for an attachment. The whittling knife (part b) has a small curved blade of steel, with a brass cap marked with illegible text. The shaft is of a dark brown wood which transitions into alternating rings of horn and wood. The slightly curved hilt is elaborately carved. The scabbard is composed of a wood sheath for the sword, and an attached bark sheath for the knife. The wood sheath is composed of two pieces of wood, bound together by woven plant fibre and animal skin. The locket(?) is ornately carved. There is a long carrying strap of plaited plant fibre, and an ornament of shell and thin tassels with beads of pink, blue, green, red and yellow.
