Eagle Platform PipeL49.3.1

Carved stone pipe representing an eagle perched crosswise on a thin, curving platform. The bowl of the pipe is on the bird's back, and the stem is part of the platform. Wing and tail feathers are rendered in realistic detail but the rest of the body, feet and head are worked with minimal embellishment. Eye sockets are inset with lead. Such platform pipes are typical of the Hopewell culture, but this eagle is unique for the addition of the lead eyes and its very fine workmansip. There are a few equidistance tool marks cross wise which make it unusual as well. Condition: excellent.

Flake45SJ280/LB6/3

CVR flake removed by Amanda Taylor from Level Bag 6 for non-destructive XRF sourcing analysis. It was sent to Dr. Craig Skinner at Northwest Research Obsidian Studies Laboratory in Corvallis, Oregon on 11/13/08 for analysis. A. Deep 11/14/08 Assigned Analysis Catalog #27 by Amanda Taylor. See Multimedia link for XRF results. A. Deep 12/02/2008 Northwest Research Obsidian Lab #BO-08-109. A. Deep 12/02/2008 Description from 45SJ280/LB6 catalog record: "Level Bag, contains two bags, H.Divjak 11/6/2003 One human tooth was possibly found in this level bag (artifact #45SJ280/1993-47/748). This tooth was found while cataloging material from 45-SJ-280 in October 1997. Although teeth and other naturally shed items are excluded from NAGPRA, this tooth is identified as a "human remain" due to the location of other burials within the site. An attempt was made to match this tooth to existing crania and mandibles from 45-SJ-280, but no match was found. SWD 11/7/97 Based on the fact that the bag these artifacts were found in was unlabeled, this catalog number was assigned by the Burke Museum. This number was assigned before the collection changed accession numbers. Therefore, a previous accession number of 1993-47 is referenced. M. Noble 4/05/2004 Contents of LB5 and LB6 of this unit were reviewed by and S. Jolivette on 11/10/04 and no other human remains were found. Based on this, the tooth is not considered to be a burial and the level bags are not considered associated. (K. Chobot, 11/12/04)"
