Bodice3425/4 a-b

Woven bodice (part a) with embroidered band across top. At centre, there is a white diamond, with the diamond shape radiating out from the centre in black and white sideways V's. Two black fabric shoulder straps are sewn on one end, and pinned in place by safety pins on the back. The upper section of the bodice fastens at the back with metal hook and clasps, leaving the bottom fabric open and drapey. The headband (part b) matches the embroidery on the bodice. It is composed of two pieces of fabric with bilaterally symmetrical designs, stitched together on one end, and attached by three small pieces of black elastic strap on the other. The interior is lined with black fabric. A typed label with the name "Deirdre Parkes" is stitched to the lining of the front, centre.

Sari3374/1

Wedding sari in off-white crepe with embroidered designs in gold thread and gold sequins. Edged along three sides with an ornate band composed of three rows of gold sequins with heavy gold embroidery in between. The sari is divided into eleven panels, four full and seven partial, with a section of undecorated crepe fabric at the end. In each panel, extending in from the sides, are triangles composed of small flower-like designs - small circles with loops around the outer edge, and a four-petaled design within. Both ends are finished with a zigzag stitch in gold thread.

Hand Puppet3352/6

Mamulengo hand puppet of a 'João Cacunda' character. Head, hands and feet are carved from wood and painted. Hands attach to plastic tubing underneath the fabric. He has grey-pink skin, and short white fuzzy hair, beard, and moustache. He has sunken cheeks, a hooked nose, an open red mouth, and large oval black eyes. His fabric body / tunic is green floral-pattern with blue floral sleeves. A clump of polyester batting is used to give the chest form. The fabric is adhered(?) to the hands and head, and wrapped with shiny blue ribbon at the wrists and neck. Operated by inserting a hand inside the body of the puppet to control its head and movements.

Hand Puppet3381/27

Calungo hand puppet of a 'Filomena' character (the form is more similar to a doll than a puppet). The fabric body is off-white, with embroidered almond-shaped black eyes, and small red lips. She has attached curly black hair with a red ribbon on top. She wears a bright green dress with dark blue ribbon lining the collar, sleeves and hem, as well as belted around the waist. She has light blue fabric boots.

Hand Puppet3350/5

Toby the Dog puppet. Hand puppet of the Dog character, from a Punch and Judy puppet set. White, fuzzy fabric body with black spots across it. Has a stuffed tail on its back, a stuffed leg on either side of its body and two long, floppy ears on its head. Wearing a dark blue ruffled collar, with a wavy line of silver trim along the bottom edge. Mouth, eyes and nose carved from wood. Heart shaped nose is painted black. Eyes have large black pupils and dark brown irises, with white spots in them. Mouth interior painted black and pink. Edges of mouth interior are beige and have teeth painted on them in white. Metal ring along top edge of body opening. Operated by inserting hand inside the body of the puppet to control its jaw movements.

Ancestor Figure3308/3

Glazed ceramic ancestor figure. Figure has a conical body with two holes where arms should be. Each arm hole has stamped triangles encircling it. The figure's head is shield-like and convex and attached at the tapered point of the body. The face is decorated with stamped facial features and a built up long rectangular nose. Tied to the head is a headdress made of woven white and red fishing net, with a single white and brown feather extending from the top. The figure wears a skirt with a fringe, knotted at the waistband. The skirt alternates between natural yellow-brown fibres, red fibres, and white net fibres. Around the waist and neck are two ceramic ornaments strung on twisted fibres. Within the body hang three light yellow glass skulls that are visible through the armholes. The artist's initials are carved into the figure's neck, and behind both the chest and waist ornaments - 'JKT'.

Lightly- ruched, teal-coloured women's blouse with pink bands around neck and torso. Neck band on back and front, torso band only on back. Neck band is trimmed with yellow, black, white, and neon green fabric. Torso band is trimmed with orange, white, black, yellow, dark green, dark blue, neon pink, and teal-blue fabric on the top edge. Pink torso band has a dark yellow-gold band underneath it and is trimmed with neon green, white, dark blue, and black fabric. Each blouse cuff has two lines of black, white and neon pink trim. Two teal-coloured ties on the right side of the neck opening, for securing the blouse.

Lightly-ruched, gold-coloured women’s blouse with dark-blue bands around neck and torso. Has slight V-neck opening on back. Neck band on both front and back, torso band only on back. Neck band is trimmed with black, lime green, white and neon pink. Blue torso band has a neon pink band underneath it and is trimmed with light pink, black, yellow, teal, orange, purple, neon green, white, red, light blue and gold. Each blouse cuff has two lines of trim. One furthest from the cuff is dark blue, white and red. Line along the cuff is black and neon pink.

Devil Costume Mask3289/82

Devil costume mask. Black fake fur is stuck to the face, which is also painted purple. The nose resembles a black devil-like creature with a tongue hanging out, with a similar reddish-brown creature extending from the chin. Attached to the mask are two pairs of natural horns. A small animal pelt, possibly deer, hangs from the back of the mask. A pair of serpents and a pair of pumas are carved and jut out of the sides of the mask. Horse hair(?) extends down from the chin. The interior is lined with brown cord fabric, and has bungee cord strung through eye-hooks.

Dress3289/46 a-b

Two part dress. Long dress (part a) and an underskirt (part b) with a large lace fringe at the bottom. The embroidery features nearby Becal, in the municipality of Calkini, Campeche. It shows people dancing traditional dances, the women in terno and the men wearing jipi (palm) hats. Elements from the natural environment are also shown, for example red hibiscus flowers, palm trees and other greenery. The underskirt has a cinched elastic waist.
