Blouse2998/9

Small square woven red top with fringed bottom and three tassels attached to each side (six tassels in all). Small vertical slit in top for neck opening. Opening is like with blue fabric. Blouse features four bright pink embroidered flowers with leaves on outer edges. Design is mirrored on opposite side. Bottom edge is embroidered. Tassels are attached with a long multi-coloured cord.

Shirt2998/8

Square woven top with fringed bottom edge and a vertical slit for neck opening at the top. Neck opening is lined with orange fabric. Top is one piece, folded over to create two panels. There are eight tassels, four on each side, tying the closed sides. Tassels are multi-coloured and fringe at the bottom is pink. Edges are stitched in a multi-coloured design. There are 3 lines along the bottom, 2 pink and a brown one in the middle.

Tall round oblong basket with handles. Bottom of basket is rectangular in shape. As weaving goes higher, corners are more rounded, creating an oval shape at the lip of the basket. Body weave of the basket is over one/under one. There are ten coloured strands woven into the body of the basket. They are red and black and alternate in an every other pattern in groups of five. The lip of the basket is done in a different weave pattern than the body of the basket. The handles are long. They are double twisted and secured through two holes in the body of the basket and green thread is used to tie them off.

Masquerade Costume Bells2956/201 e-f

Pair of costume bells on braided loops. Each round bell is shiny brass and flared at the bottom, with decorative rings carved on the outside. The clapper is a round brass ball attached on the inside by a thin metal hook. Each bell hangs by a steel loop on a thick cord of braided yellow synthetic fibre with red accents. Cantonese Opera Skirt2967/19

Long green wrap skirt. Skirt is lime green in colour, made of a light synthetic fabric. Several pleats have been sewn into the top, under a thin unbleached cotton waistband with long ties. A thick stripe of dark green sequins and translucent tube beads edges the skirt’s bottom hem in inverted ‘u’ shapes. Garment is otherwise undecorated. Skirt is fully open to one side.

Cantonese Opera Shirt2967/18

Woman’s opera costume shirt, lime green in colour and made of a light synthetic fabric. The body of shirt is undecorated, relatively short, straight at sides, with a front button panel made of unbleached cotton with a small rounded neck-opening. Sleeves are wide and scooped, heavily embellished with green sequins and translucent cylindrical beads in the pattern of a dragon with a long, scaled body and clawed feet. Clouds and swirls in green and red surround the creature. The edges of the sleeves have a wide band of green sequins and translucent beads in ‘u’ shapes.

Cantonese Opera Skirt2967/15

Back skirt panel for a woman's opera costume. Garment consists of three floor length panels, a large centre one and two thin side pieces that slightly overlap it. All are edged with white rabbit (?) fur. The panels are completely covered in green, red and pink sequins, patterned to show scaled dragons, each gripping a red ball. The panels are attached to an unbleached cotton waistband with long cotton ties. The back is lined in a plain white synthetic fabric.

Cantonese Opera Skirt2967/14

Opera costume skirt panel. Panel is long, widening slightly toward the scalloped bottom, and is covered entirely on the front by green sequins in the shape of two dragons grasping at a red and pink ball. The panel is edged in white rabbit fur, and lined on the back with a shiny white synthetic fabric. The waistband is made of unbleached cotton and has a long tie at each corner.
