Whale Headdress3106/4

Carved and painted whale headdress. Headdress is triangular in shape, and is black with white and red accents. Long white lines form a V running from back of head to forehead, with a white semi-circle at its opening. Eyes rest on shallow white hollows connecting under nose and are formed from black circles with crescent design outlined by a rounded red arrow. Mouth is a long red rectangle with a deep carved white centre. Two fins decorated with red and white detailing are attached to each side. Black ribbed fabric and cream strips hang off back of headdress. Headgear attached to interior.

A second set forms a V over forehead with a solid black band running down the rest of the forehead to the mouth. Shallow carvings around eyes form a long white oval. Eyes are formed from a solid black circle outlined with a wide black ring and a thin red ring in the centre of each oval. Mouth is a long red rectangle with two carved white lines. At each side is a white patch with three grey lines. Remainder of mask is painted grey. Ribbed black cloth and rough cotton strips hang down back of mask. Plastic headgear attached to interior.

Undersea Chief Mask3106/1

Painted and carved mask. Top edge has six rounded squares made of abalone and copper. Eyebrows made of copper with white and black outlines. Eyes are round mirrors ringed with copper, and red, white and black outlines. White and red detailing under each eye. Sunken green ovals surround both eyes and connect over bridge of nose. Sharp nose flares at bottom with open nostrils. Green, white and red on bridge, with black, white and red on nostrils. Cheeks are decorated with red ovals outlined by green, white and black bands of various thicknesses. Upper cheeks have more elaborate rectangles. Red mouth is wide open with curved black line around top lip. Green dashes run around mouth and chin. Black fabric hangs off back of mask, over elastic bands.

Puppet3105/2

String puppet (marioneta) representing the character Venus. Puppet wears a very long dark pink skirt, and a short dark pink top with plastic round nipples attached to the outside. Her hair is also pink; clear plastic points project from the back of her head. Her midriff is exposed, showing very pale 'skin', like her face. Her lips are painted dark red. Her eyes appear to be glass balls. Her hands are carved of wood. Artist's inscription at base of body.

Hand Puppet3065/22

Cloth and wood puppet of a male figure. Head is wood, with white face and painted eyes, brows, mouth and hair. Long mustache and beard of plastic fibres emerge. Figure wears a tunic of patchwork fabrics in blue, red, green and pink, with a stripe of shiny red around neck to waist. Under this are padded legs attached to black and white boots that show under the tunic. Arms are held outstretched, with wooden hands attached. Thumb is stationary, while fingers are able to bend and flex as a group. Puppet can be controlled by inserting hand up the back of tunic to a hole in head and spaces along arms.

Hat3086/3

Felt hat, light tan in colour. Brim is wide, curved slightly upward on one side, and down on the other. A band of dark tan edges the brim, embellished with white stitching in a double wave pattern. The crown is low, rounded at top, and banded by strips of wool in bright pink and red. The wool is wound several times around and secured by stitching at both sides, where the ends hang freely.

Hat3052/31

Decorated felt hat (part of a man’s costume with 3052/25-32). Bowler style hat, with a flat top and thin rim that curls up slightly at the edges. A thick band encircles the crown, made up of multicoloured, furry material in vertical stripes. This is covered by encircling straight and scalloped trim, and sequins in a variety of colours. Thick white cords sit at top and bottom of band, and a grouping of decorative pompoms are attached at one side. Interior is lined with unbleached white cotton. An elastic chin strap is attached to the inner band.

Jacket3052/27

Wool jacket (part of a man’s costume, with 3052/25-32). Wool is a dark grey, with stitched decoration in orange, yellow, and red along seams, hem, cuffs and collar, as well as down the front opening. A line of heavy fringe in multiple colours falls down the front under the collar. Jacket closes with cord ties at the collar.

Skirt3048/33

Skirt in burnt-orange and brown. The warp of the skirt is black and the weft is orange. The skirt fastens by means of a single metal eye at the back. The skirt tapers in to the waistband and is slightly gathered where it connects to the band. The skirt is lined with light pink fabric and has two elastic loops for hanging attached to the inside below the waistband.
