Retablo Altar2738/200

Brightly painted, large, portable "retablo" box altar. Two doors on leather hinges and painted on both sides in red, yellow,and black, open with red and white striped ribbons, from the centre outwards, to show two levels of small painted plaster figures and animals arranged into two scenes. On the top is a Nativity scene with the Three Kings and numerous shepherds while, on the bottom, is a scene of celebration with male and female musicians, acrobats, dancers, animals and food on a table. The exterior of the box is painted with red square and dot filled diamond shapes against a white background.

Religious charm made from a picture of the 'Nino of Atocha' wrapped in plastic. The picture is pasted onto the centre of a red paper-covered rectangle of wood and a variety of large and small seeds and garlic cloves pasted onto the red border create a colourful frame in yellow, red, brown, black and white. Three gold coloured coins and two long brown seeds are stuck to a horse shoe wrapped in red ribbon that sits on top of the picture like an arch.

Devil Figure2738/115

Cloth male devil. Two pieces of shaped red cloth are sewn together at the sides and stuffed to form a body that has horns, hair, beard, gloves, boots, shorts, and stomach made from smaller attached pieces of black and pink cloth. A long metal tail wrapped in red wool pokes out and up from rear of shorts, and long brown "hair-like" threads are stitched into the surface.

Corpus Christi Drum2738/59

Small drum with painted scenes of Corpus Christi celebrations. Light coloured skins are stretched around a circular-shaped twig frame, which are fitted over each end of the central wood piece, secured with another bent twig and bound with green plastic twine and leather fastenings that zigzag between the two. On one end is depicted a priest, an elaborately costumed dance figure and an official, on the other, a red spotted wolf and a yellow jaguar stand beside a rounded harp-like object.

Cantonese Opera Blouse1743/1 a

White blouse that is part of a Cantonese opera costume with objects 1743/1 b,c,d,e,f,g. The blouse has a round neck and long wide sleeves with open attached piece at each end. Sequin design sewn on front and back of bodice and blouse in gold, pink and turquoise. The back opening closes with seven snaps.

Green bottle glass eyes surrounded with painted white cow hide stare upwards and there is a long rectangular opening below the chin. Several lengths of green synthetic rope are wound and bound around the neck joins, others emerge from inside through nostrils and holes in the head, one of which has a fibre bundle toggle at the end.

Shark Headdress2736/8

Realistic representation of shark head is painted white and black with carved black eyes and red gill lines. Worn with nose pointing upwards, the beard and the mout,h made up of the jaw and teeth of a shark, are therefore facing forward. The headdress has long strands of grass fibres hanging from the sides and a foam lining around the interior rim. The jaw is held in with nails and two strands of woven synthetic rope are knotted and pulled through holes in the wood.
