Headdress3221/3

Beaded headdress made of shiny iridescent purple fabric, with a thick band that wraps around the forehead, a connected narrower band extending across the top of the head, and from this a third band extends from the centre of head to forehead. Each band is decorated with several lines of gold, white, diamante and pink pearl trim. Where bands meet at the forehead is a fabric circle with similar trim and a large pearl at centre surrounded by dark pink beads. Short beaded fringe hangs over forehead, with longer strands over the ears.

Dress3221/1

Dress made of a shiny iridescent purple fabric, sleeveless, of knee length, with a wide collar and button front. Skirt is pleated at back and flares toward bottom. Three decorative flaps sit at waist on hips and centre back, with tassels made of plastic beads hanging from their bottoms. Decorative gold trim and small round beads is sewn around hem, front opening, waist flaps, arms and collar. Curly appliques are sewn on collar and flaps. Front buttons are round plastic. Dress is unlined.

Duffel cape. Wool garment with a small round neck, open at front with tassel closure, and a rounded hem edged with fur. Wool is a light blue, with a yellow, brown and purple embroidered flower decoration around the hem. The lining is a shiny light brown fabric.

Blouse3264/1

Huipil, or woman’s shirt. Tunic is made from two long pieces of red wool fabric sewn together vertically, fully open at the sides, with a strip of black velvet at arms and around neck. Front of tunic falls longer than back. Exterior is heavily embroidered with many colours, showing geometric designs at shoulders and waist, interspersed with horizontal strips of fruit and foliage, and multicoloured birds.

The Trumpet Player3010/19 a-c

Male figure playing a trumpet. Male figure (part a) wearing long black robes with a white tie at the waist. He holds a trumpet (part b) in his right hand. His mouth is opened wide. The figure has a nylon string of seeds around his neck, alternating between white or red and black seeds. Both arms and legs are moveable. The figure stands on a wooden platform (part c), which has two leather loops for footholds.

Sanjuan Mask3010/13

Sanjuan Mask. Black rectangular-shaped face with slightly furrowed brow, round eye sockets, flat nose and a long, extended tongue. Large piece of animal skin nailed to forehead, which extends down back of mask in thin strips. Single hole drilled on each side of mask with a yellow string tied to. Back of mask is plain.

Short jacket. Open front with long sleeves and wide blue cuffs. A square panel hangs from collar at back, blue at top, and heavily embroidered at bottom with diamond shapes in pink, blue, white and purple. At centre back is sewn a small patch in an animal shape, coloured light tan, with head at top and feet splayed out to the sides. Fabric has a slight shine. Interior of jacket is lined in black cotton, with a small pocket on the left side.

Gloves3194/15 a-b

Gloves, or gauntlets, made of soft suede, fully lined with a synthetic fleece. Opening is wide at forearm, with a closed hand pocket and a detached thumb. Wrist panel at top is black felt decorated by beading of a large light pink flower surrounded by light green leaves, and small dark red flowers with a dark green centre. Panel is edged by a long thick fringe along the outside and a short fringe laying around the wrist, both made of imitation hide.

Moccasins3194/6 a-b

Beaded moccasins. Shoes are made of hide, lined fully on the interior in light blue synthetic fleece. Top of toe and long flap covering the back of the heel are made of green felt with beaded foliage. Toe decoration shows a white branch with green leaves and two sets of flowers, one in pink and green, the other in yellow and blue. Around the heel are similar motifs in a horizontal line, with a dark pink cotton lining on the underside of the flap. Yellow, red and white beads edge the flap.

Doll3201/4

Fabric doll. Doll is made of brown polyester, dressed in a suit of dark green cotton with a red belt. Large pockets decorate the front, and a matching green bag is slung over the right shoulder. A silver chain drapes from right shoulder to left hip. Facial features are stitched thread, with a red mouth and white and black eyes. Over the black hair is a Basotho style hat, made of thick woven plant fibre. The hat comes to a point at top, where there is a loop.
