Mask1373/19

Dark-brown carved mask of a small human face with linear carved hair peaking at crown. Mouth and eyes are slits. There are two aligned rows of three raised vertical reliefs on the centre of the forhead and one row of three more of the same on each cheek just inwards from the ears. Side edges are perfortated with ten holes.

Thin wooden slat or board with long, oval shaped hole cut through near the upper edge forming a handle. There are stylized bird's head at each end of the handle. The lower edge is slightly beveled. There are three incised figures on one of the sides. One figure is a bird, one possibly a whale, the other is undistinguishable. The surface of the wood is dark brown, from age and dirt, and the underlying wood is a yellow-brown.

Wooden northern style canoe with a Haida design painted on the outside. The canoe is painted black with Northwest Coast stylized designs on the ends in red, white and black. Depicted on each side is a Killer whale with its head and dorsal fin on the prow and the body and tailfins on the stern. There is a red border around the upper edges. The ends sweep upwards. The prow is grooved to hold a harpoon or mast and has a vertical fin to cut through waves. The interior is also painted black and has three rectangular bench seats.
