Cod LureNbz688 a-c

Carved wooden lure (parts a-c), conical in shape. The body (part a) consists of a cone structure with a smaller cone mounted on top. Three, long wooden paddle-shaped projections are attached to the long cone with nails and are bound to the top with red cherry bark. Two projections are broken in half (part b-c), and the other is split lengthwise, at the bottom. There is an old adhesive, red and white label affixed to one half of broken projection that reads ‘Fish lure, Saanich Arm, 19-3’.

Mottled wood shaft cut through and joined near the mid-point. Dowel visible at the join which is inserted into both sections of the shaft. Leaf-shaped spearhead hammered around the shaft and secured with a nail. Pointed metal butt flattened at the shaft end and hammered around the shaft. Band of iron coiled around shaft below point.

Model Totem PoleNb11.240

Model totem pole with four figures, all mounted on a rectangular wooden base. Figures from top to bottom: eagle with spread wings, whale, bear and an eagle from the torso up. Pole on a camphor edged base. Carvings are exceptionally high relief with minimal modeling. Background painted blue, beige and yellow. Figures painted dark blue with yellow, beige, purple. Paint irregularly applied throughout. Spread wings of top bird are solid wood with roughly painted blue and beige lines to suggest feathers. Back of pole is flat. Newspaper clipping about totem poles is glued on reverse.

Mottled wood shaft cut and re-joined near the mid-section. Several notches cut below the join. Black iron leaf-shaped spearhead flattened at the base and hammered around the shaft. Iron point of butt similarly attached and secured with two coils of iron band. Shaft below spearhead decorated with flattened brass and incised geometric design.

Light woode shaft cut near the mid-point of the shaft and joined with a plug. Several notches cut in the shaft near the join. Spearhead has elongated black iron blade. Base of the blade hammered around the shaft. Butt end of the spear has flattened blade hammered to the shaft.

Unpainted mask, except for red along the outer surface of the lips and the inner circle of the eyes. Forehead is rounded and down sloping. Eyes are very deep set. Heavy raised eyebrows meet at the upper nose and extend upwards across the forehead and then down to the temples, and merge with the cheekbones. Narrow, sharply curved nose, hooks under the upper lip. Lips are narrow and flare at the corners and are pursed at the centre. Chin is a square ridge at the bottom front. Horsehair extends in twenty-six bunches from the top back edge of the mask. Two piece leather head strap is tied and nailed on the inside.

A white ceramic burner (part a) that has a band of incised key patterns with four stylized dragons. Stand (part c) and lid (part b) are bronze inlaid. The wood lid (part b) is intricately carved with two tailed creatures around the central bud-shaped knob. The wood stand (part c) has a flower at the centre with a floral design on each of the three petal-shaped protrusions.

Three-dimensional male humanoid puppet: large head (part b) fits into body with skirt (part a), and a control rod (part c) with a long shaft passes through the body and fits into the neck of the figure's head. The body has jointed arms, each with a long controlling rod attached. Light red face, red upturned eyes with black pupils; red lips with white protruding upper teeth. Black moustache, ring beard, eyebrows and shark tooth decoration on forehead. Short blunt nose, large ears shaped like inverted comma. Green and gold band around head ending in a tassel of red. Carved red fez shaped headdress. Gold tassel from top of fez with end of green, red and gold hanging down over straight neck length black hair. Pronounced adam's apple. Arms articulate at shoulder and elbow. Light red hands, fingers symmetrical and outstretched. Black tailored cloth jacket, front closure, no collar, pocket on right chest. Sarong with small pink flowers and grey-blue foliage on beige background.

Curved bow which is smoothed and tapered at each end. Bound in three places with sinew: at the grip and at the ends. Bowstring of large sinew is lashed around the tips and is held in place by the bindings. The grip is slightly below the centre of the shaft.
