Mask3532/1

Narrow, oval-shaped plaque-like mask depicting two faces and bird; made of wood and coloured with orange pigment and dark brown stain. Face on top of mask is small and carved in relief. Face is oval-shaped, has a long thin nose, pronounced pouting lips and wide chin; long ears on either side of head. Depicted wearing a headdress. Beneath, bird is carved on its belly with the beak just below the chin of the face; wings are spread, touching either side of the plaque. Tail extends down between the eyebrows of the large face on the base of the mask. Face is thin and tapers to a rounded chin; face not carved in relief, only facial features. It has wide eyes, a long thin nose with large nostrils and bared teeth. Long thin ears on either side of head. All figures have cowrie shell eyes. Negative space between the figures and sides of the mask are filled with circular and geometric motifs. Sides of mask have a channel carved into them, with ovals carved in relief throughout. Plant fibre looped tie at top, on back of mask; mask back is concave.

Carving3532/8

Carving of a lizard, done in high relief, on a short cylindrical pole; undecorated base extends from bottom. Pole is stained dark brown; lizard is a matching colour, outlined with dark red pigment. Majority of lizard is on front of pole with its legs wrapped around the sides; tail touches base and triangle-shaped head is close to top edge. Alternating stripes of white and dark yellow dots decorate surface of lizard. Eyes and nostrils are white; both are oval-shaped. Top of pole has a band circling it, made of shallowly incised lines.

Dance Hat3532/7

Conical corroboree dance hat made of bark; exterior is completely wrapped in green-grey rope-like fibre. Front is decorated with a wide, vertical orange band, bordered with two white bands; small feathers throughout bands. A wooden rod is inserted through the top of the hat and has a large bundle of emu(?) feathers bound to it; feathers held in place with white strands, rod secured with white pigment along hat interior. Feathers are a mix of grey and dark brown.

Mai Mask3532/4

Mai mask consisting of a long and narrow face. Mask is made of wood and is covered in small white shells inset in dark brown-black mud. Area around eyes and nose is plain wood and coloured dark orange. Eyes are made of inset cowrie shells, highlighted with black paint. Sharp nose bridge runs through centre of face. Nose has orange nostrils with black highlights, before extending into a snake that protrudes past the chin; raised design elements on snake's face. Round shells, with swirls in their centres, inset in the centre of the forehead and below the nose, on either side. Plant fibre cord runs around bottom edge of mask, with twisted fibre strands attached, imitating a beard. Additional fuzzy fibre on top of head, imitating hair; inset cowrie shells border bottom of hair. Top half of mask back is concave; bottom half is flat. (Hanging hardware on back.)

Comb consisting of two wooden bars and grass(?) fibre teeth. The fibres are inserted into the top bar and are separated from one another with cotton strands; strands are woven into a repeating yellow and black zigzag pattern. Bottom of the weaving is anchored to the second bar, which is wrapped in green thread. Teeth extend past the lower bar and are undecorated. Stiff braided ties secure bars together, on either side of weaving.

The fibres are inserted into the top bar, made of bone, and separated from one another with cream-coloured cotton strands; strands are woven into a repeating concentric diamond pattern. Bottom of the weaving is anchored to the second bar, made of wood, which is wrapped in cotton. Teeth extend past the lower bar and are undecorated. Stiff braided ties secure bars together, on either end of weaving; ties wrapped in cotton. Red and yellow feathers inserted into either end of bone bar.

Spoon3522/43

Large wooden spoon with carved decorations. Bowl is long and thin, with a deep well. Four channels moulded across bowl base, creating three high ridges across length. Area where bowl meets neck is scalloped. Neck flares outward before tapering in at handle; decorated with incised diamonds. Area where neck meets handle is scalloped. Handle is oval-shaped with a semi-circular cutout in the centre. Bands of raised diamonds carved across front of handle; inverted triangle created in negative space at base of handle. Linear and triangle designs incised across back of handle. Braided plant fibre cord knotted through handle, for hanging purposes.

Spear3522/95

Double-ended spear with a leaf-shaped head and a spike bottom. Between the two blades is a cylindrical wooden shaft. The spearhead and spike are flat; spike has a rounded tip. Both are secured to the shaft with long strips of animal skin; space between metal and skin is stuffed with plant fibre, forming handgrips. The skin holding the spike is covered in fur; skin holding spearhead is plain. Shaft is stained(?); rest of spear is undecorated.

Standing wooden figure of a nude female wearing a neck ring. She has long incised eyes above a wide nose and small pronounced mouth; four silver-coloured teeth are embedded throughout her open mouth. A light brown band is painted across her eyes, extending from ear to ear; small semi-circular ears protrude from either side of her head. She has three large ridges across the top of her head, imitating hair. Her neck bulges outward at the centre, and the neck ring consists of rows of incised pointed ovals. Her arms curve outward, running parallel to her body, with lines incised along the bottom edge of the hands, imitating fingers. She has a flat stomach below pointed breasts; has pronounced belly button, buttock, genitalia, thighs and calves. Her feet are oval-shaped, acting as a base. Incised bands across her hips and down her stomach, consisting of horizontal lines and “X”’s. There is a large “T”-shape incised across her back with a large semi-circle extending from the top; semi-circle is divided into four triangular sections. Linear motifs are carved throughout the "T" and semi-circle.

Wooden animal face mask with a pronounced brow and smooth face. Semi-circular indents above wide slit-like eyes, imitating eye lids; lids are coloured with grey-white pigment. Deep linear impression across entire length of forehead, dividing top of mask from the rest of the face. Nail extends from centre of impression. Small bundles of dark brown plant fibre adhered along upper lip, imitating facial hair. Triangular teeth extend from bottom edge of upper lip, covered in grey-white pigment; semi-circular tongue carved in low relief on bottom of mouth. Jaw is attached to mask with plant fibre ties and nails; plant fibre residue adhered to interior surface. Top and sides of mask are flat, jaw and upper lip are rounded; interior is hollow. Mask has holes for eyes and mouth; small holes drilled along sides and top.
