Maiden Spirit Mask3466/1

Mmwo helmet mask, depicts a female face with an elaborate headdress. Face is cream coloured with raised brown lines highlighting the brow ridge, nose, eyes, mouth and ears. Additional raised dark brown designs on forehead and around ears, decorated with incised lines, painted cream. The designs are two circles next to the ears and a star-like shape on the forehead. Brown circles are painted on the cheeks, at ends of raised lines. Hair is painted dark brown and has incised spirals and lines throughout. Headdress is on top centre of head. It consists of three arches. The smaller, outer arches are cream coloured and have dark brown circles protruding from the outer sides. Below them are dark brown, irregularly shaped arches that extend toward the sides of the mask. Central arch consists of curved, dark brown poles with a hollow semi-circle on top. In middle of semi-circle are white and dark brown circles. Square cut-outs along edges of all arches, where crescent-shaped pieces are inserted. Holes through mask for eyes, mouth and ears. Wrapped cloth border tied around lower edge of mask, interior is undecorated. Large sections of mask’s headdress are missing.

Power Figure3420/10

Shrine or power figure. Roughly shaped in the form of a bush cow; made of various compacted (unidentified) organic materials. The body surface shows cracks all over in the dried, layered materials. Also a layer of orange-brown streak marks running down the sides.

Loom3263/81 a-b

Loom. Consists of a partially completed miniature loincloth tied to two bars (part a) and a removable sword (part b). Sword intertwined in centre of weaving. Sword and bars are made of dark brown-grey wood. Loincloth has rows of design across entire surface. Row designs, from top to bottom, are: plain, three rows of vertical diamonds, line through centre with alternating blocks of colour, "X" design across length, checkerboard pattern, "X" design across length, plain, checkerboard pattern, plain, horizontal diamonds, and checkerboard pattern. Designs done in golden brown, dark brown, red, brown-black and white. Rest of weaving is incomplete and golden brown in colour. Thin metal ring on right side of weaving, on the top bar.

Figure3321/14

Nkisi figure made of wood. Figure stands on a round platform with knees slightly bent. The arms are bent at the elbows, with both hands placed on a protruding abdomen with an empty hollowed-out space at centre. Each elbow is wrapped, and the right wrap contains a bird foot. The skullcap is raised, with a single horn mounted to the crown. The eyes are narrow slits, with wooden pupils, and the open rectangular mouth has four wooden teeth. Hanging from the pointed chin is a strip of reddish-brown hide. The long neck, waist and ankles are all wrapped and coloured a reddish-orange. The body is heavily decorated, notably on the face and chest.

Sanjuan Mask3010/12

Sanjuan Mask. Wide face painted black. Small red downturned mouth and large flat nose. Strip of leather with some hair nailed horizontally across top of forehead with three nails. Single hole drilled on either side with yellow string attached. White collar extends from below jawline. Back of mask is unpainted.

Spirit Dance Staff3259/53

Rattle type dance staff, adorned with deer hooves at the proximal end. Staff is rounded, carved at pommel with a small face, sharp teeth bared in a wide grin, nose flat and slightly protruding. Head comes to a small, round peak. Dozens of deer hooves have been tied to short lengths of hide and attached to the top, under the face, with long wraps of hide. The wooden handle is plain with a rounded end.

Screen Stand3139/28 a-e

Stand for kicho screen. All pieces are made of wood and covered in high shine black lacquer. Base (part a) is a rectangular box with bevelled edges. Its bottom is slightly inset. Two squares on top surface are each surrounded by six-sided, filigree-style gold metal decorations, which hold the longer, squared ends of upright rods ‘d’ and ‘e’. Part ‘b’ is the top hanging bar. It curves upward slightly at the ends, which are covered in gold filigree-style metal casings. Two holes at its centre allow the insertion of rods ‘d’ and ‘e’. Part ‘c’ is a secondary hanging bar that is inserted into the screen itself through a horizontal pocket at top. Parts ‘d’ and ‘e’ are tall uprights that hold up hanging bar ‘b’. Each is squared at the ends, and top edges are scooped upwards to create a seamless look when inserted into hanging bar ‘b’.
