Mask3321/9

Male circumcision mask made of wood. Mask is oval-shaped, with the face concave. There are almond-shaped cutouts for eyes and mouth. A long, narrow nose extends down the length of the face, with a notched ridge down the bridge. The ears are slightly raised arrows. There are two drilled holes on either side of the jaw, and a single hole behind each ear with a twisted fibre string knotted through.

Cup3321/2

Conical cup composed of wood. The cup is hollowed almost to the base. Carved around the side is a large design of three bands of lines, zigzagging in a loosely plaited pattern. Straight lines are carved horizontally around the rim and base, and vertically down the handle, with a section of triangles at the centre.

Helmet Mask3321/7

Mask carved from a single piece of wood. Bulging forehead, prominent nose, and sunken cheeks. Cowrie shells and seedpods outline the face, and are arranged in decorative patterns. The face is covered by pounded copper sheeting with repoussé designs. Continuous lines of black beads extend horizontally across the face, around the eyes, down the bridge of the nose, and around the mouth. A large black beaded trident form on the forehead. The cheekbones and nostrils are heavily beaded in small black and white beads. Goat skin, goat hair, and raffia cloth embellish the top of the head. A woven strip hangs from the chin. The base of the mask is outlined by two rows of cowrie shells, with strings of large reddish-brown seedpods and feathers hanging down.

Female face mask. The face is carved of wood, and painted with sections of triangle designs or slanted lines. Black and white beading extends from the brow line down the ridge of the nose to the chin, with a single cowrie shell between the eyebrows. The lips are outlined in a string of beads in sections of blue and black. Attached to the mask is woven fibre, decorated with strings of cowrie shells and knotted plant fibre. A small raised form, wrapped in woven material, sits on the top of the head, with strings of various coloured beads hanging down from the form, and a cowrie shell at each end.

Mask3321/10

Bwami mask made of wood. The mask has a long and narrow face that comes to a point at the chin. Although faded, the left side of the face appears to have once been coloured red, and the right side white. The forehead protrudes at the centre, and then continues down into a long, narrow nose. Small rectangles are carved out for eyes and a mouth, and two small holes for nostrils. The ears and eyes are very close-set. A beard of plant fibre is attached to six holes through the jaw line. The fibre is partially plaited, creating a solid band with long strands extending down. A single thin string is attached to the mask behind each ear.

Pouch3332/14

Small fabric pouch composed of one piece of fabric folded on itself, then sewn on the bottom and a side, leaving an opening at the top. Central design is a large diamond, flanked by concentric triangles to create a square-shape. Within, heavily embroidered geometrical and floral designs and five small inset circular glass. Five off-white shell buttons along open edge. A single row of shells with knotted thread in orange, burgundy, and light blue-green between the shells across the bag on both sides. Four tassels with light blue beads, one red, green, taupe, and eggplant, one on each bottom corner, and one at end of each shell row. Each tassel wrapped with metallic thread. Small circular mirrors inset into dark purple circular embroidery around bottom and side edges.

Dip Net3330/1

Dip net composed of a long pole handle, hoop and net. Net composed of woven cotton string. Hoop composed of two pieces of bent wood, tied together at the top and attached to the pole by two wooden pegs, black coated wire and cord. Net suspended from hoop by six metal rings (three on each side), fibre and wire bindings at top. A small piece of dark blue fabric and light green fabric are tied in the net, as well as some pieces of a rough unwound plant fibre rope. A long cord is attached to a metal ring on both sides of the hoop. A piece of off-white string is tied to the pole near the end.

Devil Costume Mask3289/82

Devil costume mask. Black fake fur is stuck to the face, which is also painted purple. The nose resembles a black devil-like creature with a tongue hanging out, with a similar reddish-brown creature extending from the chin. Attached to the mask are two pairs of natural horns. A small animal pelt, possibly deer, hangs from the back of the mask. A pair of serpents and a pair of pumas are carved and jut out of the sides of the mask. Horse hair(?) extends down from the chin. The interior is lined with brown cord fabric, and has bungee cord strung through eye-hooks.

Devil Costume Mask3289/76

Devil costume mask. One eye is a mirror, the other is painted and bloodshot. Fake brown fur is stuck to the face. The mask has three pairs of horns, one red, white, and the largest pair are painted red, green and white (the colours of the Mexican flag), and one single horn painted yellow in the centre of the forehead. Three demon-like figures protrude from both sides of the mask. There is a larger central demon that comes out from the chin area. In place of a nose is a large carved boar.

Devil Costume Cape3289/5 a

Luzbel cape composed of football shoulder pads, with a long black velvet cape, shoulders covered in light brown fake fur, large carved wooden skulls on each shoulder and smaller plastic skulls. The cape is heavily sequinned with a red devil face, with gold horns.
