Model Totem Pole3648/1

Model pole with a thunderbird on top and a masked human at the base. The bird on top has wings pointing upward, in black, red and green; a large yellow beak and feet; two small vertical black ears, green around its eyes and a red mouth. The human at the base is in a kneeling position and has bear claw hands in black outline, a red-brown body, a mask-like face with bright green across the eyes, red on the nose and mouth, and black painted hair on top. The middle section is rounded and painted in two shades of green. The pole is attached to an unpainted, square wooden base, with nail heads showing on the bottom. Artist name and date written on the back of the bird, in black, under the wings.

Wooden, two symmetrical dish halves (parts a-b) in form of a killer whale and squid; carved and painted. The inside has a black painted sea serpent ? design on both sides. The two halves are held together by a metal latch; together the dish is conical in shape. The dish is painted in black, red, white and green.

Chest3630/1 a-b

Large lidded wooden chest. The exterior of the chest (part a) shows finely grooved texturing on surface. Each panel has borders at all four edges, with fine, vertical, parallel lines throughout the centre. Five parallel grooves run horizontally along the upper and lower edges of the chest, with diagonal grooves down each adjacent corner. The corners and base are secured with root-like(?) ties, wood pegs and nails. The exterior has a dark brown-black colour. The interior of the chest shows carving tool marks. There is a rectangular piece of wood along the interior, bottom edge of one side panel. The lid (part b) is flat on underside, with an upright ridge along the long front and back edges. The side edges are also carved with fine vertical parallel lines. The lid is composed of three pieces of wood pegged and nailed together. The underside surface of the lid is covered in carving tool marks.

Drumstick3521/2

Drumstick with a cane body set into a wood handle, topped with a black metal ferrule. Cane body curves twice, in middle and near top; top curve ends in a curl. Body has a hook-like appearance. Handle is an irregularly shaped cylinder with a flattened front; tapers into an oval-shaped base. Bands of raised vertical rectangles carved along length; plain rings throughout. Bottom section of cylinder, that tapers, is decorated with incised vertical lines. Triangular channel carved into front of handle, near bottom edge.

Stringed Musical Instrument3522/94

Seven-stringed harp-like instrument with a gourd resonator. Triangular wood frame extends from top of gourd; attached to gourd with grass ties and resin(?). One rod is vertical and the other horizontal; connected at their ends with a third diagonal rod. End of horizontal rod has a moulded channel and incised decoration across the front; designs include "X" shapes and linear motifs. Tip of vertical rod is pointed and is circled with a raised band; diagonal lines carved along length. Seven strings, made of grass, are tied around the vertical rod and strung through holes in the horizontal rod. Diagonal rod is undecorated. Coils of grass inside of gourd.

Mortar3522/1 a-b

Snuff mortar (part a) and pestle (part b) made of wood. Mortar has a cylinder-like body with an oval-shaped opening and base. It flares out at the bottom; area is marked with an incised line. Tied around the mortar is a long braided cord of plant fibre; used to hold pestle to mortar. The pestle is a thin rod with a natural curve at the base.

Mask3522/32

Wooden humanoid mask with a small face that tapers at the chin. Mask has a rounded brow with a prominent ridge through the centre; slit-like eyes below brow. An orange-red band is painted across the eyes; circles indented around band and filled in with white pigment. Open mouth protrudes outward, from in between cheeks carved in high relief, with seven silver-coloured teeth embedded along the bottom edge of the top lip. Chin is pointed. Mask has holes for eyes and a hollow interior.

Snuff mortar made of wood with a shallow well. The body is cylindrical in shape. It tapers slightly towards bottom, before flaring out again; base is slightly rounded. Two grooves carved around area that tapers; space between grooves bulges outward. Hole drilled into centre of base.
