Snuff BottleN1.163 a-c

A flattened flask-like snuff bottle (part a) that has a man on a mule holding onto a bird on one side while the other side has an incense burner, and seal in relief. All in polychrome on a white background. There is a stopper (part b) that is transparent red. The wood stand (part c) has the shape of an oval within an oval that has straight ends.

Male puppet in standing position and dressed in traditional stage costume. Puppet is wearing a gold hat, an orange shirt, and a light green skirt. It has a Y-shaped bamboo control rod that is attached to its wrists and head by white string.

Mask with humanoid face. Painted dark green-grey overall, has brown hair with a black border, black arched eyebrows, and a red mouth with protruding teeth and a black and brown-yellow rim. The eyes are set in slightly concave sockets and are nearly conical with rounded pupils and concentric black and red circles at the rims. Under each eye is a crescent-shaped hole. The nose is bent with flared nostrils, and there are small, curved ears at either side of the head.

Water buffalo figure that has been carved from wood and painted black. The buffalo's head is extended forward, and its tail curves down and over its left thigh. There are three notches carved on the top of each horn where they join the top of the buffalo's head.

Part a: six stacked cones having the smallest ones in the middle while the bottom-most one has a flared base with a band of geometric diamond-shaped patterning surrounded by a double ring at either sides; b: five stacked cones having the smallest ones in the middle with a band of segmented diagonal lines filled in with white in between; c: six stacked cones having the smallest ones in the middle with a band of six white horizontal zig zag lines surrounded by a white horizontal line at either sides; d: four stacked cones having the smallest ones in the middle with two rings; e: seven stacked cones having the smallest ones in the middle with a band of two outlined diamond shapes in white; f: six stacked cones having the smallest ones in the middle with a band of an outlined upward pointing arrow that has an outlined downward pointing arrow on the other side; g: five stacked cones having the smallest ones in the middle with four rings; h: five stacked cones having the smallest ones in the middle while the bottom-most one has a flared base with a wide geometric swirl design; i: four stacked cones having the smallest ones in the middle while the bottom-most one has a flared base with a band of double vertical lines surrounded by a ring at either sides; and j: six stacked cones having the smallest ones in the middle with three multiple fingered rings filled in with white.

Stringed Musical Instrument2668/3

Cantonese opera instrument. A round, moon-shaped lute type instrument, called a yueqin, with a short fretted neck, four strings, a curved headstock and a hollow body. A dragon-like head is carved atop the headstock. Two long, lobed tuning keys protrude from each side of the headstock. The back, sides, neck and headstock are painted black.

The shaft is carved with an alternating pattern of dark vertically linear and diamond-shapes having a zig zag within designs on a natural background above the cane joints. The base of the shaft, near the pointed end, is wrapped with fibre. The long brown point is painted with black horizontal lines around the middle surrounded by black.

Spear with triangular spearhead that has a short cylindrical shaft with two raised bands at the top. The spear is secured to the long wooden shaft with woven stem ? decorated with horse hair that points towards the end of the shaft. The wooden shaft has been painted black.
