Mask2960/36

Wooden mask has a broad, somewhat flat face, with a receding chin that is topped by a large protruding lower lip painted red. The nose is large and narrow, accented with red paint, and bridge extending to top of mask. The eyes are small and round with viewing holes bored through the wood. The face is bordered by a carved line running from brow, around cheeks to lips, from which the sides of the mask drop sharply away. The head is covered by a black hat or hair. The interior of the mask is slightly concave. Two small holes are bored through the upper sides of the mask and are fitted with a thin brown string.

Ceremonial Paddle2960/45

Carved and painted hardwood paddle with a long leaf shaped blade. At the throat on the dorsal surface is carved a stylized human with large headdress, sharp red teeth, broad nose, long thin neck, arms, hands and fingers. The figure is painted red and black. The tip of the blade on this side is red. On the ventral surface is a long raised and painted spine painted red and black, with thin arms and fingers again carved at the throat. The tip is painted black and red with a V-shaped design. The paddle’s shaft is long and straight, narrowing slightly toward the anterior end, and has no embellishment.

Carved wooden figure of a standing woman, with two very large feet. The toes are carved, knees are bent. The stomach and breasts protrude. Both arms are raised above the head and have carved fingers. The head is large and round, with a face defined by a sharp carved delineation and a colour change to light brown. The chin is pointed, and the face widens toward the forehead. The nose has a thin bridge and is long, extending through the forehead to an inverted point at the border of the face. Mouth is a small slash across the chin. Eyes are protruding small slits.

Headdress2960/23 a-b

Wooden two-piece headdress or helmet mask. The body of the headdress is in the shape of a crocodile head, with big round eyes at front, ears the shape of an inverted V, and a long thick snout full of red teeth, some with rope tied around the base. A dog(?) decorated with white, blue, and red spots is held in the teeth. At the back of the crocodile’s head is a bird attached to the mask at head and feet. It too is decorated with dots, as well as stripes and blocks of colour. On top of the mask is a standing human figure that fits into a hole. The figure is detachable (part b) and has an elaborate headdress, painted facial markings and neck rings. The figure has blue arms, breasts, and buttocks, and red hands and feet. A piece of rope is tied around the right wrist.

Wooden bust of a female. The face is narrow with a small mouth. The nose is short and narrow; the eyes are heavily lidded with white sclera, red surrounding accent, and pupils that are partially bored holes. Thin arching eyebrows sit high on the forehead. The ears are carved as spirals and the hair is black and straight, parted in the centre and styled with a braid around the lower back of the head. Around the long thin neck is a necklace with a heart shaped pendant. Several small, regularly placed holes are bored into the shoulder. The base of the figure is a hollow square with a rectangular cut-out at front and a hole bored at the centre through to the top of the head.

Figure of a standing female. The face and head are narrow side to side and wide front to back. The jaw is square and sharp. The mouth is small with a wide nose narrowing toward the brow. Eyes are shallowly carved, cheeks are well-defined. The ears are large inverted U-shapes that protrude from the sides of the head. The hair at the forehead comes to a large point. The figure’s neck is long, shoulders broad and flat. Arms bend slightly and hands are held palms to the front. The breasts are large, conical, and point forward. The stomach distends slightly, with a protruding naval. The buttocks are large and pronounced; knees are bent so that the figure is in a slight squatting position. Feet are placed flat on a small circular base. A pattern of lines is barely discernible on the torso. The figure is covered with a dark brown paint.
