Mask2792/1

Dance mask worn with dance costume (2792/2 a-b). The carved wood male face has life-like features that include glass brown eyes, long upper eyelashes of blonde hair, and painted flesh tone skin, gold teeth, curly gold hair and sideburns, mustache, eyebrows and lower eyelashes. There is a slit opening at the mouth and several holes have been drilled through the surface; the two nostrils, two at the bridge of the nose, one at the top of each ear and one at the top of the head.

Model Totem Pole2785/1

Carved and painted model totem pole nailed to a squared base. Perched on the large ears of the top figure of the pole is a bird with outstretched wings grasping a spotted seal in its talons. The green, red and black painted figures in the pole include three birds and a human dangling from the clenched teeth of a wolf.

Yagis - Kwagu'l Sea Monster2004-90/3

Spirit of the Ancestors-Spectacular sea-monster masks are part of the Kwakwaka'wakw Tlasula ceremony. Masked dancers impersonating supernatural beings enter the big house in firelight, dramatizing an encounter and declaring the high status of the family presenting the dance. This sea monster can spout water through the float at the top of its head by the dancer blowing on a plastic hose and water container concealed inside the mask.
