Bird Rattle1768/16

Rattle carved in the shape of a wooden bird. Two horizontal pieces are joined below the tail and wings. Four small holes on each side with narrow cord fastening top to bottom. Feathers are carved on the back. Narrow slit from top to bottom above head. Tail is the handle. There is bark wrapped around the end of the tail. The bird is painted black. The handle is unpainted.

Small wooden bowl painted with designs on four sides, made from five pieces of wood. The bottom is flat; the ends and sides are slightly convex. Designs painted all the way around the outside in black, red, red-brown, blue on a cream-coloured background; red borders at rim and base.

Rattle1768/12

Oval wooden rattle with handle carved in one piece and remainder split and hollowed out. Pebbles(?) inside. Two halves are bound with twine at handle and attached through two sets of holes at each side. One side has black and red design, at outer edge, of head, eyes and ears. Other side has two large, double U-shapes and horizontal form lines in black and red.

Rattle1768/10

A carved ovoid shaped rattle with handle. Rattle is made of two pieces joined by metal pins on sides and base of handle. Front is convex with carved, painted human face with black eyes. Red face with black marking and crosshatching on either side of the nose. Mouth is red. Back has Northwest Coast design with ovoids, beak-like design, and crosshatching. Stones and shells inside rattle. The brown wood is painted dark red, red, and black.

Cantonese Opera Spear1704/15

Cantonese opera prop. Spear with a cylindrical wooden shaft that has been wrapped in off-white fabric tape and has a silver, decorative wooden finial. Grey hair has been attached around the shaft at the base of the finial and tied with orange cord.

Miniature Totem Pole1725/2

Small model pole. Front of base has a painting of a small whale. Bottom figure is a seated bear with knees tucked in and arms wrapped around legs. Next figure is a horizontal whale, with its tail flukes carved as the heads of two birds. Perched on top of the whale is a thunderbird with wings outstretched but angled downward and with two projections on top of its head. On back of pole, indentations and pencil mark are present in the drawing of a whale.
