Mask (a) with flat top that has four feathers (b-e) inserted into a circular drilled hole at the top centre and is painted white with black and red details. The narrow forehead has large straight black eyebrows. The mask also has small semi-circular eye holes, a hooked nose with rounded semi-circular nostrils, a pursed protruding open mouth, a pointed chin, three crescentic ridged lines from the sides of the nose to the upper side rims. Two curved ridged lines and one painted line extend from mouth to temple, and there is a solid jaw line along side rims from temple to chin. On the reverse, grey-green cord has been looped and knotted through double holes drilled at centre top and on each side rim. Inscription.
Deeply carved hawk mask. Widely spaced u-shaped ears with interior red split u, trefoil-shaped design on forehead between ears, black brows, deeply inset eye areas with circular hollow eyes, pointed hooked nose that touches the centre of upper lip, rounded semi-circular nostrils, two ridged u-forms on temples, semi-circular scallop-like design on cheeks, deeply inset area around protruding continuous lip band, pointed chin, and two nails at top of ears. On inside, two metal hooks are screwed in below the forehead, a twisted cord is looped through both and knotted, two other pieces of cord are looped and knotted around first cord, signed at upper side on right, "Hawk-Kwakiutl-Margaret Bay."
Northwest Coast style humanoid face mask, painted white. Wide flat forehead has five stitches in a vertical row at right of centre; beaten copper brows are nailed above bulging circular hollow copper eyes, slightly indented at base, in black pointed ridged eyelid lines; straight nose has indented semi-circular red nostrils; open mouth has protruding red lip bands; two stitches in a diagonal line between nose and upper lip; black bands with three rows of dots extend from lower corners of eyes, curve on cheek to terminate at side rim; nails in some holes along upper rim. On reverse, cord is looped and knotted through a hole in each side rim, second piece of cord is looped and knotted through a hole in centre upper rim and around the first cord. Piece of folded cloth nailed above eyes; two nails at left of nose. Stitches and nails are to repair crack; paint flaking; copper on eye and brow on left have green areas.
Human face mask with smooth front, straight nose in high relief extending from curved eyebrows, and oval eyes cut through. Triangular nostrils cut in nose from bottom. Mouth is hole created by two intersecting ovals. Remnant of dark painted lines, vertical wedge on chin, horizontal line on left cheek, eyebrows, and parted hair indicated across top and vertical series of dots on lighter section at centre of forehead. Carving marks on interior surface are overall fairly smooth. Small holes on sides and indentation on one side indicates that a string or cord was previously tied there. Screwed in metal eye hook at centre above eyes with a twisted multi-ply wire attached. 'J.C.' is written in white at one side.
Bee mask. Slightly rounded white forehead has a black and yellow horizontal curvilinear design, red ovoid at centre of yellow; raised thick curved black brows; thin yellow line joins orbital areas at dip between forehead and large protruding bulbous snout; yellow round hollow protruding eyes with black and white bands around pupil; snout has black triangular shape at top and bottom joined by a narrow band, black outline; cluster of five holes, top hole on right has remains of 'stinger'; white, yellow and red crescentic designs around circular white hollow nostrils; white temple; defining line for cheeks melds with orbital ridge; curvilinear black line on cheek; square-like white line defines black split U on either side of mouth area; white and yellow bands around small pointed protruding red lip band, painted design converges at lower lip point; yellow triangle on upturned chin is outlined in white. Cut cedar bark, tied with white cord, folded around a folded orange-pink cloth and nailed to upper rim; white cord and red cloth are twined into the cedar bark lengths; at side on right folded white cloth, stitched with yellow thread, is nailed at temples; brown cord twined into first 7cm. of bark. On reverse, one brown cord passes through two holes in upper rim, looped and knotted through hole at each temple; second cord is looped and knotted through chin.
Wild man or Bukwus mask with three shades of green paint on a skeletal face, with red, white and black used to emphasize facial features. Red horsehair has been stapled to top rim and centre of dome-like forehead; on either side of forehead natural wood horn-like projections have been pegged and glued, projection on left is loose; black brows, outlined in white, graduate in size from bridge of nose to side orbital ridge; curvilinear design from brows to side rim; sunken eye areas with hollow eyes; hooked nose with hollow flaring nostrils; bulbous protrusion on each cheek; wide gaping mouth exposes buck-teeth of natural wood; black and white form line design extends from nostrils around mouth to chin; white line divides cheek and chin from jaw. On reverse, four leather strips pass through holes drilled at sides and top and artist signature. Small sliver of wood lifted from front at side on right; peg for horn-like protrusion on left visible on reverse.
Humanoid face mask with a straight profile. Red horse's hair, with the ends wrapped in brown paper, are inserted into twenty-two holes drilled into the upper rim. Hollow oval eyes are surrounded by a plain tapering oval and a recessed oval. Light blue-green forehead has patches of white, wood visible through the paint, and an abstract red form line design on the forehead. Black brows protrude slightly. Blue-green band covers the temple, the orbital plane, the cheek, and the nose. Upward thrusting nostrils that are black on the underside and red on the outer side. Upper lip and chin. Three thin red-brown lines at the lower cheek on the left extend from the side edge to the mouth. One thick and one thin red-brown line on the lower cheek on the right extend from the side edge to the mouth. Open mouth with black next to the upper and lower teeth. On the reverse, there is a piece of wood that extends from the back of the mask with a strip of leather attached to the wood.
Humanoid face mask with long brown hair glued into twenty drilled holes in the upper rim. Split red u along with an ovoid and a diagonal form line design on the forehead. Pointed downturned eyelids. Hollow tapering semi-oval red eyes are surrounded by a green area above connecting across the bridge of the nose in between and over to the right side of the mask. Red ears. An eight red rounded point design surrounds the mouth and extends on to the cheek area and the nose. On the reverse, there are six holes on the upper rim, hair and glue in two holes. Small piece of wood glued between the mouth and the nose at the back. Two holes are drilled into each side of the mask at eye level while a length of string passes through the holes and is tied.
Clayoquot wild man face mask that has fur nailed and glued to the upper rim and to the protruding eyebrow ridge, end fur on eyebrows melds with the fur on the rim. Three semi-circular grooves on the forehead. Two shorter grooves extend from the upper rim to the eyebrow ridge. Hollow semi-oval eyes. Three semi-circular grooves on each cheek. Hook nose with black nostrils. Light wash of green paint on the forehead, the eye area, the cheek, and the nose. Mouth protrudes in a pursed-like shape with black lips. Pointed upturned chin. On the reverse, there are two metal 'eyes' screwed at eye level while a leather strip is tied to one eye. Signed 'Clayoquot Wildman J. David 80'.
Bee mask. Black split U covers most of slightly rounded white forehead, two white square-like forms in either side of U; across forehead, dark purple-red line, varying in thickness and shape, seven diagonal lines over brows; brows protrude at bridge of bulbous snout and taper flat at temples; thin line joins small yellow orbital areas at dip between forehead and snout; circular hollow protruding white eyes are outlined in black; snout has central black band outlined in white, black, white and red crescentic bands around yellow nostrils with red interiors; five evenly spaced drilled holes at centre of snout have remains of 'stingers'; defining cheek line melds with orbital ridge; white temple and cheeks; black line emphasizes contours of cheek, jaw line and upturned rounded triangular-like chin; dark purple-red sickle-like shape on cheeks; red lip band has yellow outline. Cut cedar bark, tied with white cord, and nailed to upper rim; cedar bark lengths are folded around an orange-pink folded cloth nailed to upper rim; white cord and red cloth are twined into cedar bark lengths; grey cloth nailed to back upper rim beneath cedar bark, two narrow strips of dark purple-red cloth are sewn with black thread at sides, edge at side on right is stiff. On reverse, two lengths of green cord, one passed through two holes in upper rim, looped and knotted at hole in each temple; second length is looped and knotted around first cord; white cord binds green cord from upper rim; light brown cord looped and knotted through hole in chin. Jagged check at upper edge of orbital area on right.
