Rod PuppetIb382 a-c

Three-dimensional male humanoid puppet: large head (part b) fits into body with skirt (part a), and a control rod (part c) with a long shaft that passes through the body and fits into the neck of the figure's head. The body has jointed arms, each with a long controlling rod attached. Blue face (Bima type) positioned slightly downwards; wedge-shaped nose, bulging white eyes with red irises, closed red lips. Teardrop-shaped red decoration on each cheek. Thick moustache, beard, sideburns, hair in black. Very ornate crown (mahkota) in red with gold diadem, karawista with green trim. Gold sumping in green and red, above black Tali Garuda. Double badong beneath grey Garuda Mungkur (short-tongued) with siyung jawi. Considerable discolouring of head and torso. Neck and upper body dull gold, each arm with black and red (?) ornaments at wrist and bicep. Hands held flat and bent back at wrist. Black chest covering and apron with cross-shaped wrapped wire designs, white wavy trim, sequins. Apron has purple waistband, and worn yellow fringe at bottom. Long batik skirt in yellow, beige and green.

Circular rattle formed of two bent concentric circles of wood holding four compartments containing the sound-making pebbles; a wooden rod is inset across the centre. Plain on one side and painted with red criss-crosses on the other, and with red and blue stripes around the outer ring.

Child's Flat FanEd1.182

A small flat inverted u-shaped fan on a frame of very fine split bamboo radiating from the handle at the centre of the flat edge. Both sides are covered with paper, and are lacquered in red, green, black, and yellow with a red panel at the top, and a triple swirl pattern in yellow, red, and green at the centre. There is a black design resembling a paper cut near the handle area. Handle is straight, painted red, and split where the fan is inserted.

Flat FanEd1.181

A flat fan made of finely-split bamboo flaring out from its attachment point to a long wood handle painted black. Perimeter of fan is circular except for the lower edge where the handle is attached which is straight and at right angles to the handle. Fan is covered with lacquered paper that has a design of three swirls converging at the centre coloured red, green, and yellow. It has a narrow edging of black paper. The fan is inserted into a split in the handle which is flat and lozenge-shaped where it covers the fan which is attached with two rivets. The shape of the handle is repeated with an outline of orange paint on the fan.

Partially two-dimensional, but fairly flat, human figure. Jointed arms tied to shoulders, without recognizable hands, and tied to controlling rods. Black hair swept back without headdress. Wide white face with red eyes and lips and ear ornaments. Facial details in black. Gold upper torso and arms. Garment covering lower torso in various shades of blue. Red hanging. Black and white floral design on skirt. Arm to left with grate-like member. Arm to right with circular member with red centre.

Hair black. Face with blunt nose, wide bulging eyes with red irises, red lips and exposed teeth. Moustache, eyebrows, and other details in black. Chest with black dotted 'y' pattern. Skin contoured to right. Green undergarment with belt and black and white patterned skirt. Feet bare, legs apart.

Flat FanEd1.214

A flat rectangular fan with two lobes at the top. Main colour is green mottled with yellow. Frame is of many very fine ribs of split bamboo (?) with paper on each side which is lacquered. Straight, black-painted, wooden handle is split and spread to allow insertion of the fan. Fan is painted orange around the handle. Around the orange area, there is a black paper cut on each side of the fan which is also lacquered. Fan is edged in dark green.

Folding FanEd1.211

A closing fan with twenty-three inner ribs of split bamboo with a painted cloud-like design on the base of each side and two bamboo parent ribs also with a painted design set into a dark rosewood piece into which the metal rivet has been placed. Fan face is rice paper with small pastoral scene painted at the centre top with seven writing characters on the left side of the face. Attached to the metal rivet, there are two light blue-green tassels, 25 cm. long, including the cord.

Human face mask carved from a single piece of wood; blue with three black dots on forehead and one on each cheek. Eyes are concave slits lined with black. Stylized black hair with parallel curving incisions; white line at hairline; small mouth with red parted lips and eight white upper teeth; long, thin nose; high forehead and decoration at each temple. Two birds at top of head, one with red body and green wings; other with white body and blue wings; yellow foot and beaks covered with multi-coloured dots. Four holes in lower rim. Rubber band stapled across back. Metal screw at top.
