Painted bear headdress. The head is wide and slightly rounded, with large wedge-shaped ears on top outer edges splaying slightly to either side. A carved line emphasizes the forehead and head top, which are painted black. Eyes are red and white, surrounded by green, backed by carved red rectangles. The black and natural brown snout is wide, tapering toward the nose where carved nostrils are painted red. The bared teeth are square with pointed cuspids, painted white. The interior of the headdress is hollowed out. "Hank Robertson" is carved in the wood, inside.
Rattle made of six cones of tin attached to a wooden handle. The cones consist of different sizes, three wide and long, and three shorter and smaller in diameter. All are crimped at the handle, where they fit into a metal ring that joins them to the handle. Each cone widens toward the base. The larger three contain a wire hung with a metal nut as a clapper. The cones are decorated with circle and line motifs pressed into the tin. The wooden handle has an engraved line that spirals from end to end.
Wooden shield. The front is decorated with carved and painted abstract patterns. The top and bottom sections of the shield are painted red with ochre pigment, and two thinner black bands border the carved panel of decoration that covers the majority of the shield. The carved decoration consists of two sections, top and bottom, featuring four sets of conjoined coiled shapes with a diamond pattern at the centre. These are painted red and are raised above the background, which is white. Running between the upper and lower sets of coiled shapes are two undulating raised shapes which are in-filled with red pigment. The central diamond is raised and painted red with a white diamond in relief surrounding it. Part b is a fragment of the shield which fits into the upper left corner, decorated with one half of a coiled line motif. A considerable fragment of the upper section of the shield is missing as are large portions of the borders around the sides of the shield.
Model totem pole. The base of the pole is carved to show a kneeling bear partially painted black, front paws resting on the centre of the chest. The bear is surmounted by a large spotted frog facing upward, legs wrapped around to the sides of the pole. Above the animal’s open mouth is a small red canoe holding three human faces. A second upward facing frog sits above this, also spotted and with legs clutching the pole. A human figure surmounts the pole, legs bent, toes pointing inward, hands on knees to either side of a large rounded belly. The face is wide, with a red mustache and brows, and a smooth, bald head. The back of the pole has been hollowed.
Carved and painted model pole. The base of the pole is carved to show a seated human figure partially painted red, toes pointed inward, hands grasping a small bear around its waist. Its open mouth shows teeth, with heavy brows over wide set eyes. Above this figure are carved five more bears. Three smaller bears are painted with black spine and rib lines, two face downward and one up. A large bear sits at centre facing front, all feet turned toward his spotted belly. At the very top a smaller bear also faces front with paws resting on its chest. The back of the pole has been hollowed out.
Painted model canoe. The body of the canoe is wide in the centre line, narrowing toward both the bow and stern, where it rises high above the deck. The keep is pronounced, the bottom of the boat very slightly rounded. The outer hull is painted with black formline images from gunwales to keel, while the interior and base are undecorated. Lacquer covers the exterior.
Rectangular wooden tray with short side walls, attached to its base by screws. Walls are straight on the outside and sloped on the interior toward the tray base. The interior base of the tray is decorated with a central incised image of a whale inside a circle, with minimal decoration in blue, black and red. To each side of the circle are similar smaller whales, four in total. The interior side walls of the tray have stylized images of painted whale eyes and fins. Rounded handles are attached to each end wall with screws. On the bottom of the tray is written in red ink, “Carved by Charles Gladstone Skidegate Mission BC 1949”
Double slipper lantern slide. A rectangular wooden frame holds three glass plates side by side. The centre plate is stationary and shows a coloured, printed image of two boys (in four figures) hopping over the other. The boys are vibrantly coloured in yellow, green, red and pink. The background is black. Parts b and c are panes of glass with blotches of black paint carefully placed to intermittently hide elements on the centre slide as they move past it. The frame is built to accommodate the moving slides, having large grooves in each side for the plates to move into, and semi-circular finger holes at the edges.
Single slipper lantern slide. A rectangular wooden frame holds two glass plates side by side, one stationary and the other moveable (part b). The stationary plate shows a vibrantly coloured, printed image of a barber dressed in yellow, red and white, standing close beside a large man with a frothy beard, in white and blue. The background is black. Part b is printed at top centre with the yellow-sleeved arm of the barber holding a razor. When the pane slides back and forth, it appears that the barber is shaving the customer’s beard. The frame is built to accommodate the moving slide, having a large groove in the end of one side for the plate to move into, and a semi-circular finger hole at the edge. Written on label: "easy shaving one penny"
Single slipper lantern slide. A long, rectangular wooden frame holds two glass plates side by side, one stationary (part b) and the other moveable (part c). The plate that would be stationary (now loose) has a circular image at centre showing a vibrantly coloured, printed scene of a city with grand architecture in the rear-ground, and a river with a sturdy brick bridge in the mid-ground. The area around the image is black. Part c is a similarly sized, moveable pane of glass printed at bottom centre with a variety of small black boats and at middle with a train puffing smoke. When the pane is moved back and forth, it places the train on the bridge and moves the boats into view on the river. Stamped in wood: "Newton / 5 Fleet St / Temple.Bar / London"
