Fertility Figure3192/1

Fertility figure (akuaba) in female form. Head is large and round, flat in profile, with cross-hatched hair at top, a slightly protruding forehead, and a small face. Eyes are wide, closed, and nose is small and straight. Decorative gouges decorate the cheeks. Below a long thin neck are small breasts emerging from the torso between stubby arms held to the sides. Stomach is covered with cross-hatched grooves. Legs narrow toward bottom, where they meet the small rectangular base. Back of figure is undecorated.

Harvest Tool3179/3

Harvesting tool. Tool is carved from a single piece of wood, with a long curved hook at one end, widening and thickening into a rectangular shape that has three long tubes bored into it, to house three fingers. Below this is a flat wooden surface that sits along the back of the hand.

Spear Thrower3179/2

Spear thrower. Tool is long, thin and leaf shaped. Rounded resin grip at one end and a squared tip at the other. Plant fibre and resin are wrapped around the tip to hold a small upwardly curved piece of wood, upon which a spear woutld attach. Tool is flat on this side, and slightly convex on the other. Lacquer applied to surface has a fine bubbled texture.

Wooden needles. Two needles are attached by a knotted string of twisted, light tan yarn passing through their eye holes. Needles are long and thin, thicker throught the top and midpoint, then narrowing to a sharp point at bottom.

Spindle3177/16

Wood spindle. Shaft is needle shaped, long and thin, tapering to a point at each end. Centre of spindle is painted red-brown and grey with four sets of encircling black lines. Two of the sets include white lines interspersed with the black. The spindle’s tips darken in colour to brown.

Wood spindle and whorl. Shaft is long and thin, tapering to a point at each end. A cylindrical clay whorl sits just off mid-point, painted black with white flower motifs separated by lines of white and red-brown. The wood on either side of the whorl is painted with encircling lines of red-brown, dark brown, and white. The spindle’s tips are unpainted.

Canoe paddle. Blade is long and leaf shaped, very slightly convex on both sides, with a tapered, rounded tip. Handle is thick and round at neck, flattening toward grip. Grip is tubular and extends slightly beyond the width of the handle. Decorative paintings on paddle show a large red and black striped fish with flukes and dorsal fin below two black rectangles with a dot at centre, and similar in red with traces of lines extending outwards. On the other side of the blade are linear and box designs, along with a motif showing a red circular centre and short black lines extending off. At top is a large fish in red and black with prominent teeth, and a dorsal fin.
