Folding FanEd1.193

A closing fan with twenty-seven inner ribs of split bamboo each with an abstract design burned on the base of each side and two parent ribs of bamboo also with burned designs while one end of each is set into a piece of dark rosewood through which is passed a brass rivet. Fan covered with light brown paper on one side and painted with a landscape scene and six characters. Upper edge is covered with very sticky cellophane tape.

A polished red-brown hardwood with black crusted patina on the handle. The handle has a knob on its end. Two rings around the pestle's centre separate the slightly flared head from the handle.

One piece, cylindrical, brown wood club with slightly flared ends. Stout shaft swells slightly to carved blunt grip end. Carved pattern is vertical zigzag lines separated from others by straight lines and bordered by four horizontal bands of the same. Extends down the length to cover one-fifth. Blunt opposite end is conical-shaped. Dark brown patina.

Trapezoid-shaped block of wood, hollowed out and re-closed on one side with a piece of fitted wood. There is a hole in the bottom of the base and at the curved end for sound. There is a hand grip carved into the wood at the end where the metal prongs are attached. Eight metal parallel prongs are held in place by a cross piece metal bar attached to the base by wire loops threaded and resting on a right angled strip of metal at one end, and a strip of wood at the other. There is a round metal sleeve on each prong. The strips of lightweight metal are wound around the base of each prong (or key) to act as resonators. The top face has a linear design burnt into the wood.

An elongated face mask with carved extensions from the top and the bottom. The forehead is raised. The face recedes sharply. The eyes are set upon the facial surface and are oblong with dark centres, looking straight ahead. The nose flares. The mouth is oblong with a surrounding raised area. The chin is raised from the facial surface.

Rectangular box (part a) of lightweight, light coloured, unfinished wood. Inside the box, there is a rectangular green card, to which is fastened, with light red silk cord, a set of miniature figures made of plant fibre, clay, wood, metal and thread, and painted in polychrome. Figures include; clay farmhouse, maple tree, pine tree, temple, pagoda, torii, fence, bridge, two boats, lantern, two chickens, two cranes, crab, human figure on raft, human figure fishing, human figure walking, human figure carrying load, and donkey with burden. The lid (part b) is stored separately.

Flat FanEd1.189

A flat inverted u-shaped fan on a frame of very finely split bamboo radiating out from the centre of the flat edge at the handle. Each bamboo strip is bent back in a wide u-shape. Fan is covered on both sides with paper, and is lacquered red with a black edge, a small black design like an airplane, and a black design like a paper cut around the handle. Painted orange around the handle. Straight wood handle is painted black, split for insertion of the fan, and fastened with two tin rivets.
